St. Paul man hurled 4-pound dog against parked car, charges say

A man is accused of throwing his wife’s dog, which weighs less than 4 pounds, repeatedly against a parked car in St. Paul. Police found the woman cradling the Yorkshire terrier in her arms as she cried, the dog’s blood on her shirt.

The dog appeared unconscious but was OK when it was checked out by a veterinarian, police said.

Police cited Khat Peng, 28, with misdemeanor animal cruelty Friday, April 27.

Officers were called to the 700 block of East Magnolia Avenue about 8 p.m. Wednesday. A neighbor saw a man picking up a Yorkie and throwing it “numerous times,” and could hear the dog yelping, said Sgt. Paul Paulos, St. Paul police spokesman.

The dog was lying motionless in the yard afterward, the witness reported.

Police arrived and saw a man identified as Peng. They asked if he owned a Yorkie and he said the dog was his wife’s and was in the house, Paulos said. Police knocked on the door and a woman answered, cradling the Yorkie.

Officers asked if the blood on her shirt was from the dog and she said it was, Paulos said. The woman told police she did not know what happened to the dog, but she’d found him in that condition when she came home from work.

Police asked her to put the dog, who is 1-1/2 years old and named Bentley, on the floor to assess his injuries. He appeared unconscious and was twitching, and blood was seeping from his ears and mouth, Paulos said.

Police brought the dog to a vet and arrested Peng. At the vet’s office, “the dog was

examined and was doing remarkably better, eating and drinking on his own,” Paulos said.

The vet did not see “serious, long-term complications,” and the dog went home with the woman, Paulos said.

Police do not know what precipitated the alleged attack on the dog – Peng did not talk to police and asked for an attorney, Paulos said. He was released from jail on his own recognizance.

Peng did not respond to a voice mail left Friday, seeking comment.

He is scheduled for a May 29 hearing.
