NIACC Track: Edmond, Burchett set region records

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Tanesha Edmond (So., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) and Emily Burchett (Fr., Mayview, MO) both set region records, and the Trojan men swept the throwing titles at the NJCAA Region XI Championships on Wednesday and Thursday.

Edmond won the 400-hurdles in 59.89 to set a new region and school record.  She also placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 32.28 meters.

Burchett threw 43.72 meters in the hammer throw to win and set a new region record, and she placed second in the discus with a 34.25-meter toss.

Trey Taylor (Fr., Bloomfield, CT) and Lance Maxwell (So., Racine, WI) both won two throwing events on the men’s side.  Taylor won the hammer with a 44.60-meter toss and the javelin with a 47.87-meter mark, while Maxwell won the shot put with 14.96-meter toss and the discus with a 48.78 mark.  Maxwell’s discus throw was just .09 meters off of setting a region record.

The Trojans also swept both 5000-meter runs, with Anna Buenneke (So., Hazelton, IA) winning the women’s race in 18:56.04, and Trent Smith (Fr., Charles City, IA) winning the men’s in 15:20.39.  Cody Manchester (So., Mason City, IA) also had a strong run in men’s 5000 with a third in 16:07.70.

Two relay teams qualified for the NJCAA Nationals as well.  The women’s 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays both qualified for the national meet.  The 4×100-meter team won that event with a time 51.01, while the 4×400-meter team made it in on time with a 4:02.12 finish.  The target for the 4×400 event was 4:04.29.

Outside of winners and qualifiers, Darcy Nelson (So., Lake Mills, IA) had a pair of top-fives.  Nelson finished second in the javelin with a 32.88-meter throw, and fourth in the 800-meters in 2:22.78.  Ashley Ubbelohde (So., Waterloo, IA) rounded out NIACC’s top-three finishers on the women’s side with a third in the steeplechase in 12:40.10.

The men added two top-fives in the 800- and 1500-meters.  RJ Harris (So., Des Moines, IA) was third in the 1500 with a 4:02.44, and Johnny Worley (Fr., Greene, IA) was fifth in 4:09.67.  Harris also placed fourth in the 800 in 1:59.06, and OJ Ojullu (Fr., Worthington, MN) finished fifth in 1:59.28.

Nako Omot (Fr., Worthington, MN) also placed third in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.38.

NIACC will take a few weeks off before the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Levelland, Texas on May 15 to May 17.
