Op-ed: City council should be investigated for collusion (by Peter Children)

Common sense is lacking here in our community, unbelievably so.  The main problem are personalities; conflicting, and entrenched with a sense of entitlement fueled by petty prejudices and spite.  There are armed camps here, different groups that ignore 95% of the population’s wishes.

We have a mayor with an affinity for alcohol; a man who had a past record of arrests in Clinton, Iowa… here we put him in charge.  We have a city council who should be investigated by the attorney general’s office for organized collusion.

The mayor appoints a panel to study the possibility of an “All Events Center,” the panel is hand picked, a stacked deck with those to whom the facility would in some way personally benefit each financially.  It was a public joke, much like the guy who put the panel together.

Alex Kuhn rode in the front seat of the patrol car for the first time and the Globe-Gazette put his picture in the paper. How nice; he raised hell in a local bar and the same paper fell mute.  Janet Solberg is in a “quid pro quo “ relationship with Eric; insurance for votes. Turncoat, who lied on camera, was sent as an enforcer to the landfill to get them in line for Eric and ended up having his lunch eaten.  Trout makes an impassioned plea that falls on deaf ears.  Willet the development director who has developed nothing, also speaks and keeps his record of zero accomplishment intact.  Hickey is just taking up space, nothing more; he’s a hired vote……his reward is to be able to drink with the mayor after the meeting….but on other nights he’s on his own. He’s what is called low maintenance.  John Lee; everything that was said about him before the election was a lie; he is not his own man.  Jean Marinos wants to be anywhere except at that table, and it shows.

Then there is the court house and the supervisors, that’s like jumping  out of the fire and into the frying pan.  Until  NIT came on, no one knew they where there. They were a very quiet little group, non committal shying away from any and all attention until NIT started covering  their meetings;  meeting where the public were not encouraged to speak or ask questions…until now when NIT turned on the lights.  This is a part time job where their pay exceeds $125.00 a day seven days a week with more benefits than you could ever hope for…insurance, mileage, meals along with God only knows what else.  Look around you, what have these people accomplished that you can see? How about the fair, what else, can you point to something positive?

Then there is this “untouchable fair board; this ominous body of people who run the fair grounds; what an absolute joke that is, the problem is that it is a “sick” joke played on the people who live here and suffer through fairs that are an embarrassment.  Currently these people are being sued by Wanda Kruse for wrong doing.  There is a better than even chance this case will never see the inside of a courtroom because too many unknown facts could be reveled…that is my opinion. There could be questions asked like, “where did the money go?”  There could be an “outside audit” preformed, individual personal financial inquires could be demanded of each board member….no is will be settled outside of court…far outside.

Is this community any different than countless others around the country?  No it isn’t, they are all pretty much the same.  But should we settle for that axiom? No we shouldn’t, we should strive to get it right; there needs to be a citizen’s council apart from the lock step city council, a citizen’s advisory board independent from city government that could act as a watch dog over self interests and inept governing.

But the greatest deterrent against what has permeated our system of government, both city and country, is voting; you people just do not vote. And those who are now the problem count on that single fact, they plan on it, they count on you not to take the few minutes it might take to cast a vote to end a history of no accomplishment served up by career politicos who have sucked the blood of your labor for a quarter century and produced nothing in return.  This city could easily serve as an example of what happens when qualified voters stay away from the voting booth. Your vote is what people in the Middle East are dying for everyday, why do you think everyone wants to come here; they don’t want your material wealth, they want to make their own choices in life, they want to vote.  This next election lets set new records at the polls, and lets get that new broom, the one that sweeps clean….

I’m confused, why does mason city have a mayor and a administrator running this city. For as long as I can remember we had the mayor form of government. Then several years ago we ended up with an administrator. I don’t remember getting to vote for that form of government. One of them should go. Sorry, maybe both. Actually, with all of the conflict this city government has had, they should all go, then we could start over with a clean slate. That is, like peter says, if everyone would just get out and vote.

John, the rationale was a untrained elected person shouldn’t run a $30,000,000 business. Someone who has the training should be in charge of the day to day operation of this big of business. The Mayor was then made a figurehead.

“Reggie” you know what you just posted is a bunch of BS We have a govenor that using yur logic is untrained how about the federal government. The mayor or city administrator does not run the day to day operation of any city its the department heads and if we hire qualified staff for these positions we could save 150,000 a year and get rid of the city administrator. The public did not want this form of government for Mason City and it was never voted on by the people. What we got when the administrator was hired was just a figure head who has to play a political game with the mayor and council to keep his job. I think we need to go back to strong mayor form of government and at least if the people are unhappy with his or her job performance we can get rid of them every 4 years.

At least you are consistent Peter.Lets recap. Peter doesn’t like the mayor, anybody on the council,Jay Urdahl, or anybody on the fair board.I think he likes Matt,Anonymous 1 and maybe Anonymous 3. He’s too old to run for either the council, mayor or a supervisor position. Did I mention he doesn’t like the mayor.I do agree with one thing. Vote !!!

Disapointed would be a better choice of words than dislike. I don’t like collusion and I think Eric needs o seek treatment. He’s been a little more low key now that there is a $100.00 bountry on his head for a photo of him in public drunk.

Peter I thought you had “PROOF” of the Mayor’s drunk and obnoxious behavior. You told me not to bet against it. You also agreed that eye witnesses were not reliable. So again what is it? Do you have proof or are you just mud slinging?

Peter,

You need to run for either supervisor or the council. Its that simple. Why sit on the side lines when you could be doing something about what you perceive as wrong?

Too old

I guess I wasn’t aware there was an age limit on running for one of these public offices.

For Peter, old is not an age but a way of thinking.

I am not in agreement that the panel appointed to the “All Events Centre” was a group of stooges, nor had any had any personal gain involved. Add to it, they were only advisory, not elected to dictate public policy or spend money. Only our City Council has that ability.

It has been alluded that body may try to circumvent a bond issue thus not giving the people the final voice. That prospect does concern me. It is a major investment, short and long term to the City.

But for right now, I see the streets are getting swept, garbage picked up, and potholes filled. At least that has not changed. And until I see in black and white someone desires to change that, there is no worry.

This panel also was not appointed by the Mayor. Each council member (and I believe the Mayor) got to appoint one person of their choice to the panel and no one had veto authority.

Thank you for clarifying that.

I THINK THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO DO IS TO LET BRENT TROUT GO. HE WAS HIRED TO LEAD AND RESOLVE CONFLICT TALK TO PEOPLE THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED. MR. TROUT IS A GOOD YES MAN, JUST ASK THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND MAYOR WHEN THEY DRESSED HIM UP IN A RED SCARF AND TOLD HIM WHAT TO SAY WHEN THEY TOOK HIM TO WASHINGTON DC. I DONT THINK WE NEED TO PAY SOMEONE OVER 130,000 DOLLARS A YEAR TO NOT GET THINGS DONE. HOPEFULLY BRENTS BOSS’S THE CITY COUNCIL WILL TAKE A HARD LOOK AT WHAT HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED UNDER BRENTS LEADERSHIP AND LOOK AT ANY POTENTIAL SCANDALS AT CITY HALL UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP AND ASK THEMSELVES WHAT ARE WE PAYING THIS GUY FOR.

Echo; if we’re talking about pay in relationship to accomplishment, then Bookmeyer, Trout along with the entire councl could be charged with theft.

Peter” I agree there has not been much accomplished with the new council but its very early in their terms hopefully we will see some things happen soon. I have no expectations of the mayor he is part-time and his history doesn’t lead one to believe much success will happen. { But he can talk a good game.} In my opinion Trout has been a big bust as city administrator. Whenever there is a controversial topic he does not offer up any resolutions or compromise to keep things moving. Just look at his work on Streetscape, trash plant. Can anyone tell me what we are getting for the 130,000 a year we pay this guy. Does he get job reviews and who does reviews do they interview department heads and employees to get their opinion on his leadership skills. It would be interesting to know their thoughts on this guy.

Although no one needs to be reminded of this silly sappy bunch it is mandatory to bring it home PC and NIT. Regularly. Thank you very much.

By the way people Peter is by no means being disrespectful to any one in the council cult. He or anyone else cannot help this is the true being each has to offer. Offer? Well hardly they are what they are as stated and it is quite embarrassing to say the least. The kicker is they REALLY believe they are pulling something off and getting ahead on their resumes. Sorry we’re all on to you creeps.

Peter-your good points are overshadowed by your negativity and personal attacks on our council members and supervisors. You know someone must like the supervisors if they are voted in for 4 and 5 terms. It seems like the people who don’t like them must not vote. I too amd dis-satisfied with our current city council but I don’t necessarily think they are all bad people. From their point of view I would say they think they are all doing the right thing and you are nothing but a shit disturber. Make your point without personal attacks and people will pay a lot more attention to what you have to say.

I am not looking for a coach; it is what it is. They chose to vote in unision which tells us all they have no independent thought,

I am not coaching at all. Just stating an opinion from years of experience. Unfortunately I did vote for some of the people on the council. It comes down to the same old thing. They will say anything to get elected and then they do just the opposite. Just like our president.

The only reason the supervisors are voted back in 4 or 5 terms is because it’s just like Peter said. No one attends their meetings, no one really knows they are there. I know they’re there. I had an issue with the county years ago and they did nothing to rectify my situation. Seems funny that now that NIT is attending their meetings and it’s an election year, Jay Urdahl has signs out in Mason City. Never seen that before.

Does anyone know why Bookmeyer went to jail in Clinton? Just wondering.

If know one can or will answer this question I am wondering if it is that big of a deal. I am NO fan of bookmeyers by any means but if it were that big of a deal I think it would have been out by now.

Clinton buried the records for some reason.

His past shows his character and we should go down to Clinton and get the information and report on it.

in addition to your question. are the MC police required to do a background check on all public officials? like they have to do with police officers?

The people who are informed and made the effort to vote put the current group in office. Live with it. Just because you disagree with their view doesn’t mean you need to write a weekly smear piece. Pathetic!

What’s the matter? The truth hurt?

Unfortunately I have asked Peter numerous times to prove his allegations but he never has.Do you know what these 3 things have in common?
Jumbo shrimp
Military intelligence
Peter Children speaks the truth
They are all a oxymoron.

A cornucopia of good points throughout the article (once you weed through the chaff).

Your last two paragraphs summed it up extremely well, get informed, get educated, and get involved. Vote!
