MCPD locates small child wandering alone in parking lot

MASON CITY – Mason City police responded to a missing child reported by phone at 8:49 p.m. Monday evening at Bonanza Restaurant, 2700 4th Street SW.

It was reported that a very young child was wandering alone in the parking lot at that location.

One caller told NIT that the child “couldn’t have been much older than 2-3 years old.”

According to the police report, officers arrived on the scene and transported the child to police headquarters.  The child was located by the callers.  The report says that a short time later, the child’s mother and D.H.S arrived at the station.

It appears no arrests were made in the incident.

Maybe not home in bed, but probably not wandering around town at 8:30 pm. Yeah yeah yeah, your kids get away from you & what not, but the fact that the police have to notify you that they found them? WTF, hell no! It was probably dryer mom or the girl that had a baby at workforce, they both have kids 2-3 years old also. I hope the mother of this child learned hard & fast from this. Too many pedos in this area to let your kids wander off!

Get it straight …you sound very defensive in your comment. I do agree people shouldn’t jump to conclusions bout the situation. The fact that a child was found at 8:20 or whenever by herself is a cause for getting involved. And the fact she was 2 or 3 yrs old not like 6 or 7 raises a big concern. A child that young you can’t take your eyes off of and by this happening I hope the mother has brains enough to keep an eye on her better from now on. With all the crape that happens these days with kids you never know

I Agree that this little girl should have been in bed but NO ONE…… knows what happened except for the parents. Kids that age CAN open doors by themselves. She could have gone outside when her mom was in the bathroom, down stairs doing laundry, anything. So before you jump to conclusions, accidents can and DO happen. This mother could have had her back turned for two seconds and she slipped out. I don’t agree with the situation but don’t attack her without knowing the facts first.

i help look for the little girl and it wasn’t around 9:30 that they found her it was 8:20 when she was found so understand that you people have nothing better to do but sit here and talk shit about the mother of the child? why not get a life and worry about your own. I know that the mother of the little girl loves her and cares about her yea she slipped away but you know shit happens my parents lost me a few times when i was a kid because i would wonder away from them when i KNEW they werent looking the whole neighborhood was looking for her an there WAS CARS DRIVING AROUND IN TOW LOOKING FOR HER THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PARKING LOT OF HY VEE HOBBIE LOBBY KAPLAN AND EVEN ACROSS THE HIGHWAY why not try being a little understanding before you try an put down the mother just because she took her eyes off of her for a minute you assholes worry about your own damn selves

I agree with get it straight!!!

1st off, how dare anyone try “explaining” logically how a 2 yr old little girl is found out aimlessly wandering in only a shirt, pants, and soaking wet socks @ 9:30 PM, instead of in warm pajamas, tucked SAFELY AND SOUNDLY in her own bed… she wasnt found in the bonanza lot, she was spotted in kaplan univ lot and brought to safety in bonanza where the cops were immediately notified! as far as DHS being notified n involved- they should be!! id like to know how this little girls parents explain “their” side of the story. luckily this little girl didnt end up wandering behind hy-vee and other stores into the wooded areas where the pit is to where noone couldve, if at all find her alive.. what puzzles me more is the fact that NOONE driving in or around burger king/hyvee noticed that small of a child walking with no one in tow looking after her that late- its a rather well lit and trafficed area no matter what the time is.. people juz that bling or ignorant these days???? hopefully this little girl was put somewhere SAFE, and the so called parents get whats due!!!!

Doesnt sound like you know much of the facts there smarty pants! Apparently you dont have kids, otherwise you wouldnt be so quick to judge. I raised 3 kids by myself and I will admit, they can get away from you in a very short amount of time. Accidents happen, and lessons get learned. You just have to thank GOD that nothing bad happened. Im sure this mother feels a world of guilt for what happened, whatever the situation may have been. Obviously you are perfect, so maybe instead of sitting on your computer judging, condemning and criticizing others when you dont know the facts, maybe you should pack your perfect things and move to a perfect world… because this isnt it! You live and you learn! Move on!

It is mandatory that DHS is called! Just b/c they are called doesn’t mean there is something wrong…The workers from DHS are there to help!

Yea right! I know people that work for them and I know how they feel. They back stab people all the time. If you heard 1/2 the stuff I have heard from workers, by the way I shouldn’t even be hearing you’d feel the same way I do.

that is a bunch of crap. I don’t think you know what you are talking about. My sister works for DHS and I know how much she and her coworkers do care. They are very dedicated and caring. I’m sure there is a bad apple among them but not very many. Thanks to all who work at DHS and for all the giving you do

Ok Happyguy, When someone is turned in for abuse and it comes back unfounded they are still marked. I know a guy that wanted to work with young kids at a camp but because of the back ground check, which showed up as an investigation for abuse but came back as unfounded he was told he could not do it. How fair is that? I am not going to get in a pissing match with you about DHS. I stand behind what I say as I am sure you will stand behind what you say. Yes their are bad apples out their I’ll give you that. I am sure their are some very kind people that have the kids interest at heart.

Why is it the first thing people want to do is call DHS? Man you don’t even know the whole story. I know as a parent and grandparent that I worry more about DHS than anything else. Mistakes happen I’m not saying having a small child walking around a parking lot is a small thing but how do you know the parents weren’t crazy with worry because they couldn’t find him? I remember one time the whole family went to church (10) and we got home with 9 my parents were not bad parents, we went back to the church and their sit my little sister just waiting for us to come get her. I’m glad all you people that judge have been the perfect parents and have never done anything wrong when raising your children. Before any remarks about my parents NONE of us ended up in jail, in trouble with the law and are all working and raising our own children. I hope when my children are old enough to have children of their own that they love and respect me as much as I love and respect my parents.

Because it is protocol to call DHS in these sorts of incidents. It’s just like calling EMS with someone is down and unresponsive.

How the hell u lose a child that late at night in a restaurant parking lot??? I dont know the whole story but sounds like parents should have beeen charged

I agree with anonymous…just because this young child was wondering around the parking lot does not make these parents bad! DHS does not always have to be involved in every case! They (the parents) do not always have to be punshed unless this is not the first time this has happened. Noone is perfect, but parents do need to keep a closer eye on their little ones. Not only that but as far as the mcpd goes they can’t really solve a crimes anyway! Why do u think there is so much crime in mason city now!??
Parents please keep an eye on your kids! Raise them right, teach them right from wrong if you don’t then they will steal, fight, and only raise the crime rate and THAT we don’t need!!

They should be watching their child a little better. Luckily the kid was picked up by mcpd and not a sex offender. I would really like to know how this happened. Not saying there’s an excuse for the parent but who knows what really happened. Dhs needs to investigate on this issue more I hope…but knowing the system it probably wont

Great parenting! Watch your kids, its not very difficult!! How do you lose your kids? Just like how do you “forget” your kids in your vehicle. People that do that should be charged with Murder/Manslaughter!

Woah, you cant be charged with something unless there is evidence of that crime. A missing child, who was found, is not grounds for manslaughter or murder. Try this.. Get your nose out of other peoples business and into a law book.
