Iowa hoops notes: McCaffery with first pitch, Gatens at Portsmouth, Woodbury on USA team

Scott Dochterman, CR Gazette –

Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery is a Philadelphia native and a Phillies fans, but for one day in August, he’ll have to support the Chicago Cubs.

McCaffery is scheduled throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Wrigley Field on Aug. 31 when the Cubs battle the San Francisco Giants. The game starts at 1:20 p.m.

“I’m honored that I was asked to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Cubs game at Wrigley Field,” McCaffery said in a statement. “Not only am I looking forward to that opportunity, but also seeing all the black and gold that will be in Chicago that weekend. We have a tremendous fan base in the Chicago area and I know there will also be a large number of Hawkeye fans traveling to Chicago for the Cubs game and the Iowa football opener at Soldier Field. It will be a special weekend.”

The following day the Hawkeyes’ football team faces Northern Illinois at Soldier Field.

Incoming Iowa freshman Adam Woodbury is one of 24 of the nation’s top 18-and-under players that will attend the 2012 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team Training camp.

According to an Iowa news release, the training camp will be held June 5-12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo., will be used to select the 12-member team that will represent the USA at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. The player invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team committee.

The 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship will be played June 16-20 in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. Players eligible for this competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1994.

Woodbury, a Sioux City native, will be one of 17 players from the high school class of 2012 and six players from the 2013 class on the training camp roster. He is a 7-foot center.

Iowa’s Matt Gatens competed in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament for college seniors last weekend. Gatens, who recently completed his senior season at Iowa, played in three games and averaged 9.3 points, 4.0 rebound and 2.33 assists a game. He put up six 3-pointers, which tied for third-most, and he played a tournament-high 95 minutes.

Gatens, a 6-foot-6 guard, finished as the Hawkeyes’ sixth leading scorer and was tabbed a second-team all-Big Ten selection by media. He is an Iowa City native.
