CLEAR LAKE – Clear Lake police confirmed that a 15 year old boy was struck or “punched” by another person Thursday afternoon at Clear Lake High School and a Mason City ambulance transported the boy to Mercy hospital.
No arrest was made in the incident.
No other information was released.

Oh? In reality, it has everything to do with human behavior. Where do you think forgiveness comes in? Love? Honesty? Helping others? Those were the lessons we learned in religion. It was in the secular world we actually saw examples of how they worked, or did not work.
Maybe a few weeks in Theology class would help you connect the dots.
it seems that’s all that’s in the paper any more. I heard two teens were caught dealing drugs ages 14 and 17. They are younger all the time. Has anyone else heard this? violence and drugs what’s this town coming to!
When is it ok to use your fists?? This kid called the other kid a not so nice name. He shouldn’t have said it, but he didn’t deserve to have his nose bashed in either. JMO
I know a dude who drives school bus and he says there are good and bad kids. I still feel its how you are brought up.
If i were a parent id look at what and how I was bringing up my kids. If you teach them to be shitty then they will treat others the same way. If you teach them everyone is out to get them, then everytime they do something wrong they yell you are out to get me cause (my name is santa claus). Its the parents fault that they teach their kids that just yell and hollar and the school will back down.
Parents don’t care for the most part. Everyone tries to teach their kids to be pacifists and then when the aggresor’s punch them out they scream for help. Turning the other cheek only get you two black eyes instead of one. All the teachers will do is refer them to the counselors who will dumb them down with drugs. Then when they come off the drugs they are really violent and just don’t care. Until the kids are taught pride and espect this will continue. Talk to any police officer, they will tell you. There have always been bully’s and there always will be. The only way to handle them is to stand up to them. If you go to the authority’s they will just disrepect you even more.
Not sure how this non-story made the news. I taught in MC schools for 35 yrs. Kids will fight. If they reported every incident they would need another section of newspaper. Truth be told it was rougher and more frequent when I started in the 70’s, but tapered off greatly. Where it once was 4-5/month became 4-5/year. That being said I always thought it was handled too lightly. It seemed the only places you could not go to jail for decking someone was school or a hockey rink. I always felt charges needed to be filed in some of the more severe engagements. Nothing to see here folks, time to move on.
Yes you are right, kids will fight. But the times have changed drastically. It used to be punch someone on the playground or after school and it was over. Now we have to be worried about knives, guns, and bomb threats. And yes it does happen and has happened in other parts of the country. Kids killing other kids and kids bringing weapons to school. I am all for pressing charges, and stopping something that could escalate into something worse.
Bendare, we never had the school intervene if it was after hours or off property. That was a community/parent issue, not the school’s business.
I got suspended for two days for defending a girl in class. But after school, that kid got a whole lot more than the punch in the head he got in class. He probably ended up being a wife beater today.
While it is prefered that kids lean to avoid conflict today, it aint a bad thing to be able to defend yourself either.
The slippery slope started with Roe vs. Wade. We lost our respect for human life.
We kicked God out of the classroom and replaced it with man-centered rules. Who ever is in charge rules! In this case it is the Government schools.
Lawsuits are a veil for laziness and wanting control over our children. The school board could put policies into place that make parents responsible for their children’s actions but the Government run schools do not want to. They need the control over the curriculum and shaping the way our kids think.
We have a double-edged sword at work here too.
Parents all to often WANT the schools to have this responsibility so they don’t have to BE responsible. This gives parents the option to blame everyone else but themselves for their children’s bad behavior.
Students fighting have always been part of kids growing up. What has changed is our Government Schools and the way they handle these matters so they can be control.
One difference today from times gone by is our fellow man has been taught to have no fear, no guilt, and no shame. This kind of self centered belief keeps shifting man’s boundaries to a lower and lower standard.
Until this changes the future looks grim.

I firmly agree with the above. Everyone seems to screas for accounatbility, but they themaselves are accountable to no one.

God has no place in the classroom of public schools. Religion has nothing to do with logic.
God was in the American classroom since the beginning of our country. (Look up the New England Primer)
Note since we tried to remove God in the 80’s from our “logic” we have seen great moral, social and personal responsibilities decline.
I have yet to meet a person who makes the “Take God out of our schools” attitude who didn’t pass the buck on the decline of our children to be the schools or the governments fault. And yet they also give no solution for the decline… they just want… someone else to worry and handle it.

I don’t know if god exists but I have morals and no problems blaming and disiplining my kids. Bible thumpers only blame the devil it had to be him because you all are such great parents. When your kids get knocked up you would send them away to relatives or convents because you did’nt want to be shamed. That is great teaching make mistakes and hide them in the closet see how well its worked for the catholic priests!
This stuff happens more and more as todays values get thinner and thinner. People suing schools when their kids misbehave because they don’t know what is right from wrong anymore. Than the next step they are on NIM and relatives complaining how no one should be talking about their already damaged kid. We as citizens need to know who they are so we can protect our families. Kids are to busy being raised by the guy who is the next mothers live. So now you have a guy who don’t have no respect by moving in with you and your kids handing out different rules when than don’t have moral rules for them self. Now your kid gets in the way of another angry kid with the same twisted anger than the school is being sued. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? I suppose there answer is lets go have a drink. I am surprised this got out. The Clear Lake PD had to come to the school early in the school year to arrest a teacher for public intoxication. They did a site and release thing swept it under the rug. Once she pled guilty CLPD was asked for the incident report and did not provide it instead referred those digging to the City Attorney. NIT knows what I am talking about.

Are the incidence of violent or personal crime up i north Iowa…the recent murder on the streets of Mason City…the assault of a 15 year old in school…OR are we simply hearing about these incidents more now? I’ve lived and ministered in north Iowa for 30 years and cannot recall the frequency of such events as we’ve seen recently. What is going on in north Iowa?

Combination of both Reverend. There has always been schoolyard fights. No, that does not condone it.
As a younger man, it was a learning experience. Standing my ground, while avoiding senseless fighting. We soon learned who the idiots were, and who was safe to be around.
The biggest source of that silliness was due to our attendance of a Catholic school. Local kids thought it to be a sign of weakness and ‘un-cool”. However, the joke as it were was on them. Graduation rates and career success went to those who were Catholic students in greater numbers than those from public schools. At that time, students in Catholic High Schools had a 90% graduation rate from college.
The “bullies”? A lot of them cycled in and out of trouble, even to this day.
When the principal at newman impregnated the secretary back in the 80’s was that cool. Did they use that to teach kids that bad choices have consequences or did they brush it under the rug and do nothing. Religious hypocrisy at its best!
