FORT DODGE, Iowa – Mikayla Smith (Fr., Mason City, IA) was by far the class of the field at the Iowa Central Spring Invitational on Tuesday as she shot a 73 to run away with medalist honors.
Smith shot a 36 on the front nine and a 37 in the second half of her round to win the title by six strokes.
“Mikayla had everything going today: bombing her drives, approach shots were center green or closer and her putting was fantastic,” NIACC golf coach Chris Frenz said. “That’s a pretty good combination.”
Sarah Steinauer (Fr., Clarinda, IA) and Alexandria Eckenrod (Fr., Mason City, IA) had solid days as well with rounds of 83 and 84, respectively.
“All the girls played well today and it was unfortunate that we had a conflict with a class schedule and couldn’t put together a team score,” Frenz said. “We would have had our all-time team low score.
“Regardless, all of them are starting to peak at the perfect time as we prepare for the Regional Tournament next Friday and Saturday (April 27th and 28th).”
Buena Vista won the team title with a score of 354.
NIACC will host the NIACC Invite on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. This is their last tournament before going to the Regional Tournament at Otter Creek in Ankeny next week.
