New Entrepreneurship Academy at Garner High School

GARNER – North Iowa Area Community College, Garner-Hayfield High School and several neighboring school districts are partnering to form a new Entrepreneurship Academy at Garner-Hayfield High School for the 2012-13 school year.

The NIACC Business Division and John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, in collaboration with the University of Iowa Pappajohn Center and the Jacobson Institute, will provide educational resources.

Eligible enrollees will be high school seniors from the participating school districts.

Fall Semester courses taught at the Academy Include: Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Emerging Business Practices and Technologies, Composition and Speech I.

For Spring Semester, students will build their entrepreneurial skills with more advanced courses including:   Entrepreneurship II, Business Careers, Business Internship, Composition & Speech II.

Academy students will earn college credit, as well as high school credit, for these courses.  Academy classes will meet from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday through Friday during the school year.

During the academic year, students will be introduced to the “entrepreneurial mindset and the essential skills needed to develop and launch successful businesses.”

Garner-Hayfield High School Principal Paul Schoneman said, “Garner-Hayfield High School continues to support students earning college credit while in high school and the new Entrepreneurship Academy will offer this opportunity. Students are very excited about the new curriculum offerings and the continued composition/ speech college credit they can earn during their senior year. As a school district we are committed to keeping our curriculum current to help students prepare for college and the world of work.”

Tyler Williams, Superintendent of the Garner-Hayfield and Ventura Community Schools, said, “We are proud to partner with NIACC on this exciting new option for area students.  The initial reaction from students is one of excitement and anticipation.”
