PANORA, Iowa – Dalton Olson (Fr., Clear Lake, IA) finished third individually as the men’s golf team placed sixth out of nine at the two-day long AIB Spring Invitational.
Despite better conditions than Friday’s round, the Trojans only shaved one stroke off their 324 score they posted on Friday to finish with 647. NIACC entered the day fourth in the standings.
Central College-White won the event with a 619.
“Friday was a tough day on us with high winds but I really thought today we would score much lower,” said NIACC coach Chris Frenz. “The conditions were pretty good with a wet course, but we didn’t take advantage as a team. The rough was very thick and if you weren’t hitting your ball in the fairway it was very penalizing.”
Like the team as a whole, Olson shaved off a stroke from Friday to shoot a 75 on Saturday for a two-day total of 151. He finished three shots off meet winner of Drew Osier of Central College-White.
“Dalton was very aggressive today when he needed to be and played very smart when he put himself in some trouble,” said Frenz. “Because of that course management, he kept himself in the running for an individual title.”
Brent Tarr (Fr., Clear Lake, IA) cut a stroke off his Friday score to shoot a 79. He finished tied for 12th with 159. Adam Brinkman (So., Clear Lake, IA) copied his 80 to finish tied for 14th at 160.
Jacob Urdahl (Fr., Mason City, IA) and Chris Hall (Fr., Mason City, IA) both shot 89 to finish the tournament at 177, which tied for 44th.
“Our putting hurt us a lot, these greens were a lot quicker and big, so there were too many 3 and 4 putts greens,” Frenz said. “We’ll work on a few things on Monday and hopefully be ready to go (for the week).”
NIACC golf will be in Fort Dodge on Tuesday before hosting the NIACC Open on Thursday.
