Another big earthquake hits Mexico; no major damage reported

By Tracy Wilkinson, Los Angeles Times –

MEXICO CITY — A powerful earthquake hit Mexico on Wednesday, the second in three weeks. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake’s magnitude at 7.0, and its epicenter was in the western Pacific state of Michoacan, about 240 miles from this sprawling capital. Its depth was about 40 miles and, although close to the ocean, a tsunami warning was not issued.

The tremor shook buildings in Mexico City, and many people evacuated. But Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said major damage had not been detected and city services like hospitals and the subway were running normally.

On March 20, a 7.4 quake hit the southern state of Guerrero, damaging hundreds of homes there and killing two people. It was followed by numerous aftershocks, including the strongest on April 2.
