Baseball – Marshalltown sweeps No. 7 NIACC

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa – Marshalltown Community College swept No. 7 NIACC on Thursday afternoon, 4-3 and 6-2.

NIACC, now 23-6, gave up four unanswered runs during game one.  Marshalltown scored three in the fourth to tie the game at three, and got the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Trojans got a pair of hits from Robert Swenson (Fr., Mason City, IA) and Hunter King (Fr., Mason City, IA) in the game.  Mike Bohl (So., Mason City, IA) and Corey O’Conner (Fr., Clarion, IA) both had two strikeouts while pitching.

The Tigers came from behind again in the second game.  Marshalltown recorded five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead, which would hold until the games conclusion.

Reynaldo Sala (Fr., Santiago, Dominican Republic) led NIACC at the plate with a pair of hits, while Drew Verstegan (Fr., Mason City, IA) had five strikeouts while allowing one run and a pair of walks in four innings of work.

Marshalltown, while a member of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) like NIACC, is a NJCAA Division I program for baseball, while NIACC is Division II.  Since they are at different levels in the NJCAA, the games did not count towards conference records.

NIACC will be in Estherville on Friday and Saturday for a four-game series with conference foe Iowa Lakes.  Friday’s games begin at 1 p.m.
