ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — An avalanche buried as many as 130 Pakistani soldiers in the country’s Himalayan region, an army officer said Saturday.
The incident occurred early Saturday in the Siachen region that is disputed by India and Pakistan, about 60 miles north of Skardu.
“Up to 130 soldiers were buried by the avalanche,” said the officer, who requested anonymity. “We have launched rescue operations with helicopters and experts have already been dispatched.”
The Siachen glacier region has been the scene of fighting between Pakistan and India since 1982, after Delhi sent troops to occupy the area that is part of the Kashmir conflict.
Both nations maintain military presence in the area.
