I just finished watching the video concerning the discussion on the 28E agreement which as been in place for forty years, this is between Mason City and the Landfill of North Iowa. It made me ill.
The first thing that should be done is offer a vote of no confidence on Turnquist. Expel him from the board as someone who is plotting against the best interests of the Landfill. Just as with the office of HRC he convicted himself on tape.
In his second diatribe against the very board he sits on, he openly discussed the dismantling of the Landfill. He mentions other cooperative members such as the Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors along with the city of Clear Lake, Iowa as possible members who he thinks would act in concert with his wishes. This tells me there is a strong possibility he has already had talks with them. This man is so dumb they should take away his drivers license. After viewing the tape in question, ask yourself this; how can Turnquist in all good conscience walk into the next Landfill meeting and sit down with the same people whom he wants to dismantle? How…how do you do that?
Measures should be taken immediately to remove him; he has acted counterproductive to the best interests of the very organization on which he serves….and he admits on tape he is soliciting others to join him in his effort. The Landfill board should not conduct any business in his presence, none.
At this council workshop there were no Landfill members except Turnquist, no invitations were offered to work in unison. Don’t get the idea this is all about our inept councilman Turnquist, no it goes much further, it permeates City Hall like something bad in the drinking water. What you are witnessing here is an overall mentality that prevails in that building, these people are all out to lunch, they are all off track. Turnquist mentions several times on tape what the “constituents” want; what does he know about any of that. That would be foreign to him.
Do any of you really realize the problems this city would have if we pulled out of the 29 member coalition? It would be catastrophic, unimaginable; you would not be allowed to use that facility. Your cost of living would go up for one thing. The big question I see before us now isn’t necessarily about the Landfill as much as it is this; can we really afford to wait until the next election to get rid of Eric?

I think this is Mason City’s way of saying we are not going to be forced into a reworked 28E agreement that would be to the detriment of the city.They purposely did it on camera so the LNI Board could see it.I think the LNI needs Mason City MORE than Mason City needs the LNI.
Why do you think turncoat has gone thru so many jobs and now like his puppet master is a stay at home. No employer with any brains wants an ego freak disrupting their business.
Watch the video again. Is it just me, or is there a hesitation in the voices of the other council members and Trout when asking questions? Am I a mind reader? It is as if they are thinking, “I can’t believe Tornquist is saying this of video”.
This foolish man, Tornquist, reminds me of a Dog slobbering over a nice thick T bone steak. Drooling over the millions of dollars he can steal from you and I. I believe ALL of the funds at the landfill are for the protection of the enviroment. Should the future closure cost more then the segegated protected funds, there are additional funds to cover cost overruns. I believe even if these fools pulled out of the landfill, any future closure cost overruns would still be a liability for the citizens of Mason City. At which time these carpetbaggers will be long gone.
Please think about an online petion sign up to have Tornquist removed from the LNI board of directors. In person meetings could be arranged for Signatures. A rally meeting place perhaps.
I would recomend to the executive board of the landfill to commission a new cost study of closure costs. This is to protect the real stakeholders…..you and I, the citizens that require the exiting gabage to be stored safely into the future.
This is just one battle, the war to take back our City, our County, our Country starts here at the grass roots. To WIN the battle, we all MUST take action. It is so easy to complain in passing conversation, on the internet, to bury our discontent with leadership. TAKE ACTION. Urge your friends and family to register to vote. Challenge opinions. Politely of course. VOTE. Show your dissatisfaction, commit to make a difference with a signiture.
Again I agree with you; an on line petion would be a good start. It would only serve as an indicator but it would send a strong message as to what the people living here think.
Should the catstrophic occur, it will cost in the millions (I doubt it will because LNI has been from all accounts, a good steward). The remaining small communities would be hit with a huge bill. But given MC has been the major contributor of waste at LNI, it would force legal action. And DNR would be foolish to let MC pull out without a hefty protection/mitigation fund.
Who pays? We all do.

Tornmeyer will never apologize and never replace any of his appointments. This small man’s ego is the size of mount killamanjarro. He is mason city’s napoleon. He will drag us down as he tries to win these little battles… in the end, mc loses the war.

I think the first good faith move that could be done is replace tornquist with lee. He has not been on the council that long and hopefully could restore some faith between the two entities. It’s just bad for everyone. Talk of dismantling the LNI shows just how big the egos are and is no better than a two year olds tantrum.
“catastrophic ,unimaginable” Maybe a little over the top Peter?If the City did decide to drop out of the LNI and the state would allow them to do it , the City might be able to negotiate a lower fee with Lake Mills and actually save the citizens money.I know the haul would be longer so this might negate the cost savings but it would be worth looking at.
My first job as newly elected mayor would be to reduce the buget…drop the axe on Willett, Sandahl, and possibly Trout.
Remove mayor pro-tem from Tornquist.

I also saw the video and I wonder if the board members are supposed to serve the landfill or the city they represent. Not clear to me.
I would think the primary entity they represent would be their own city then secondary would be LNI.So Tournquist is only informing the other council people what is going on at the LNI.
After watching the vidio I tend to agree with you Peter. There is more going on then came out in the workshop. Turncoat is a issue and will continue to be a issue until voted off the council. However, I think he is a good little soldier who is doing what he is told. I really don’t think it means that much to him. Someone with their own goals is pushing him. Guess who that might be.
