BRIEF: Minnesota Timberwolves’ Nikola Pekovic considers ankle surgery

By Ray Richardson, Pioneer Press, St. Paul, Minn. –

March 25–Minnesota Timberwolves center Nikola Pekovic, diagnosed with bone spurs in his right ankle, said he will consider surgery if his condition does not improve.

“I really can’t go into next season with this thing,” Pekovic said of the bone spurs before the game Sunday, March 25, against the Denver Nuggets at Target Center. “We’re going to try to figure out some things in the next few days.”

Pekovic has missed three of the Timberwolves’ last four games with a sore left ankle and will not play in Sunday’s game. He also is expected to miss the Timberwolves’ next two games at Memphis and Charlotte. Pekovic said he hopes to play Friday night against the Boston Celtics at Target Center.

Pekovic said the bone spurs developed in his right ankle from “overcompensating” to keep pressure off his left ankle. Pekovic, who ranks fourth in the NBA in shooting percentage (56.5 percent), has been the Timberwolves’ starting center since Feb. 4. He’s averaging 13.5 points and 7.4 rebounds.
