Authorities battle grass Friday fire near NIACC

MASON CITY – At approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday, a report of a pasture fire that was out of control was called into the Mason City Fire Department.

Fire fighters were dispatched to 18323 280th Street, just north of NIACC.

It was reported that the fire had already jumped three fences, and that they were worried about it heading north toward the houses.

At the scene, the fire personnel were having a hard time getting to the area of the fire. Many surrounding communities, including Floyd, Nora Springs, Plymouth and Ventura, assisted with the fire and bringing in water.

“I was down there closer to the fire and I swallowed a lot of that smoke,” said one Mason City Fire Fighter, “It’s the dry grass and muck kind of smoke.”

The fire was still ongoing, into the evening hours, and more water was being requested.

More information as it becomes available.
