Dog dies, Austin, MN man sustains puncture wounds after pit bull attack

Matt Peterson, Austin Daily Herald –

A Yorkshire terrier is dead after a pit bull attacked it and bit the man who was caring for it last Friday.

Mary McGrane of Maple Grove, Minn., said her father, Donald Peterson, of Austin, was walking her Yorkshire terrier on Friday when a pit bull charged out of a front door on 10th Avenue NE in Austin and attacked the 3-pound, 3-year-old yorkie.

According to Austin Police Cpt. Dave McKichan, a community service officer responded to the attack at about 10:40 a.m. on Friday. While attempting to defend the yorkie, Peterson received multiple puncture wounds to his hands and later received medical attention.

Peterson immediately took the yorkie to the vet before speaking with any officers.

“I just never want to see anything like that again,” Peterson said about the pit bull viciously shaking the yorkie.

Veterinarians performed surgery on the yorkie shortly after it was attacked; however, McGrane said her dog was dead by the time she arrived from Maple Grove. McGrane said she and her father were distraught over the weekend, as the yorkie was like part of the family.

“When I walked in, the vet showed him to me in the surgery room at the Austin Vet Clinic, and it was just horrendous to see,” McGrane said. “All of his ribs were broken, and his stomach was punctured.”

McKichan said officers are keeping the pit bull in a pound and reviewing its behavior for two weeks before making any further decisions. He added that it appears the attack was unprovoked. The police report has been given to the city attorney’s office, and the pit bull’s owner is pending formal charges. McKichan could not comment on what may happen to the pit bull. McGrane said she plans to file a lawsuit against the owner of the pit bull, as she had to immediately pay for the vet bill, and Peterson incurred $1,094 in medical bills. The Herald could not reach the owner of the pit bull on Monday for comment.

LOOK you ignorant people. That is actual research that puts “your” beloved small dogs at the top of the list for bites yet you are not running around trying to ban them! Anyone and I mean anyone that has a dog that attacks or bites a person should except the fact that the dog possibly will do it again and in my opinion should be put down. But to ban a entire Breed that gets nothing but bad publicity because of idiots like Micheal Vick and stupid punks that think they look cool is obnoxious. I’m sure none of you realize that even though PETA and most others wanted to destroy all of the Vick dogs, all but 4 or 5 were adopted and are living healthy family lives. I’m sure you were one of the thousands screaming to kill them but now are cheering on a POS like Vick every Sunday.
Every decade there is a new dog that is put on a Ban list. Its been Rots, Shepards, Dobermans, and now Pits. You only hear the Negative but never the positive. Why not do some research people.
I’ll end with letting in on 2 awesome Pitbull facts. The most decorated military dog in American history was Pitbull, and the police dog that holds the record for sniffing out the largest drug bust was a Rescued Pitbull.
Ignorance is Bliss

Change one word and the list dramatically changes. Try searching for top ten most “dangerous” dogs. Just because an animal is aggressive that does not make it dangerous.

And you are right, ignorance is bliss, to you, but not to the person/animal your “dangerous” dog attacks.

I work at a Vet clinic & yes there are more small dog & non-Pitbull bites. Like I stated before, publish ALL dog bites or none at all. It is discrimination.

Thank you Jason for posting the information! Extremely accurate! 🙂

Most major cities have banned pit bull breeds to protect people from being attacked or their dogs bitten. Denver is one of them and surrounding areas in Colorado. It is time for the Midwest to wake up as well.

Denver has since planned to lift their ban because it made NO difference in the amount of bites, plus took money away from their community because all the responsible Pitbull owners that were able to moved away from there.

A couple summers ago I was walking my 2 wonderful Pitbulls when a JRT came out of nowhere & starting biting & attacking my dogs. I put my leg out to fend the JRT off & his owner came out & picked him up. Gave me a nasty look. I looked at my dogs & there was blood on the ground & one of mine had puncture wounds. The owner of the JRT put her dog in the house & came out to help me look over my dogs. She paid the vet bill & provided vaccine information proof. Now I ask you…..Why didn’t I get my story on NIT, GG or KIMT?????? My dogs did nothing other than growl & try to run away from the vicious JRT. Allowed a complete stranger to see how badly they were injured & walked home still well behaved.

Might I add that mine have never been to any training classes, it’s just the way the owners treat them. If they’d eliminate back yard breeding then no dog would end up in the wrong hands. Both of mine are adopted from shelters as adults. Don’t know what kind of life they had before, but now they are loved & safe & they know that.

Now here this poor dog who did nothing wrong sits in a shelter awaiting his/her fate. The JRT was comfy sitting on his couch while my dogs got stitches & IV fluids. Hate & discrimination is horribly unfair. RIP to the Yorkie & hoping for the best for the Pitbull (or so they claim it was). Lots of news stories misidentify the dogs, on purpose maybe. Anyway, thinking of the dog quarantined & the owner.

Now wait a minute, you ignorant idiots!! Reading one side of the story must be bliss for you! The other day I was walking with my daughter, a friend & my friends shih tzu….a Pitbull came running out of a yard & guess what?! Sniffed & started playing with the Shih Tzu & gave my daughter kisses!! I am proudly owned by 3 Pitbulls myself & have worked with animals for 10 years. It’s not the breed, it’s the owners & the lack of training. Places like Petco offer classes for responsible ownership & socialization, which should be required for owning ANY dog. And to whoever said they are “ugly”, I would have to say that you are very wrong. Nothing better than my Bully Smiles! I love all dogs, but my favorite is the American Pitbull Terrier. Anyone who has a pet needs to take classes & do socialization. By the way…ANY dog who got into it with a Yorkie would have caused the same amount of injuries, working with animals as long as I have, I’ve seen it time & time again. The problem is the media doesn’t showcase those, only the ones to do with Pitbulls. Publish ALL dog bites or NONE at all!

Since dog owners are incapable of controlling their animals, I would be in favor of simply banning pit bulls from within city limits.

I would kill this dog, it’s owners and anyone associated with it.

With all the great breads of dogs available, why do people pick this hideous breed. While you can train a dog to be vicious, it appears to me that the Pit Bull breed is more often involved creating death to other dogs and humans then any of the other breeds of dogs, without training!

The outcry to outlaw Pit Bulls is always met with opposition by the owners of and breeders of Pit Bulls. They have one excuse or another why they are such a great bread. I don’t buy that anymore. Time has demonstrated the Pit Bull breed is unpredictable and viscous.

Those that are choosing this breed need to look to other breeds to find there pet friend.

Me, I want them outlawed. Period. There is not enough money to pay the costs of the damage they create, not to mention all the rest of us have to pay higher insurance premiums due to insurance claims from Pit Bulls.

“With all the great breads of dogs available, why do people pick this hideous breed.”

Ugly dogs for sure.

“Those that are choosing this breed need to look to other breeds to find there pet friend.”

NO, they dont! they dont need to ruin another breed, this isn’t a “pitbull” problem as much as it’s an OWNER problem, the kind of morons who fight and encourage their pitbulls to be aggressive will just move to another breed and do the SAME thing to that one.

Ive seen a pitbull “kennel” page on the web once that had these extremely “macho” looking photos showing how their dogs could take down a wild boar, and they posed with a dead boar hanging from a rope, these ugly dogs around it, and the owners looked and dressed like a bunch of young punks, and the dogs had collars and chains on like motorcycle chains.

Need to outlaw these MORONS not the dogs.

Zoo,

I used to believe like you that it was an owner problem that made Pit Bulls aggressive. I am not buying into that anymore!

History says that this aggressive nature is part of the Pit Bulls make up. Yes, stupid owners promote that aspect of the Pit Bulls personality, but all to often it just comes our totally on it’s own.

I stand by my change of attitude and vote to have them banned as pets!

I am tired of reading about all the death to humans and other dogs they create, spontaneously!!

WHAT decision has to be made???!!! Bang… dead doggy… good boy.

Another pit bull !!!!!

That is one situation I hope I am never in. I feel terrible for all involved.
