Mason City Police warn of scam

MASON CITY – Mason City police are warning of a phone scam targeting senior citizens.

The police department says it has recently received reports from elderly citizens saying they received a phone call from a subject claiming to be their child or grandchild.

The caller has claimed they are in trouble, such as being in a car accident or have been arrested and need money wired to them as soon as possible.  In recent cases, the caller seems to have done some investigation; they know the son’s or daughter’s name and may even know they are vacationing or visiting a certain area.  Suspects may even hve a phone number which shows up on the caller ID as coming from the area.

Mason City police are warning that if you receive a call like this, it is likely a scam.  Do not send any money or provide any personal information to the caller without first verifying the validity of their claims.

Please cal the Mason City Police Department if you have any information at 641-421-3636.
