NIACC track and field teams compete at nationals

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The NIACC track and field team had three fifth place finishes in the second day of the NJCAA National Indoor Championships on Saturday.

Trey Taylor (Fr., Bloomfield, CT) was fifth in the men’s weight throw with a throw of 15.82 meters (51’11”).  Teammate Lance Maxwell (So., Racine, WI) placed 14th in the same event (14.35 meters, 47’1”).  Justin Victor of Coffeyville Community College (KS) placed first with a toss of 17.53 meters (57’6½”).

Emily Burchett (Fr., Mayview, MO) placed fifth in the women’s weight throw with a 16.12 meter throw (52’10¾”).  She was less than three feet off the winning throw from Candicea Bernard of Central Arizona, who posted a 16.93-meter mark (55’6½”).

After placing fifth in the 3000-meter run and not finishing during the 5000-meter run, Anna Buenneke (So., Hazelton, IA) placed fifth in the women’s mile in a time of 5:18.79.  She was eight and half seconds off the winning time from Yehaterina Miroshnikova of Barton County Community College (KS) (5:11.29).

In other notable finishes, RJ Harris (So., Des Moines, IA) finished eighth in the men’s 800, and the men’s 4×800-meter relay team placed ninth in 8:03.15.  That team consisted of Harris, OJ Ojullu (Fr., Worthington, MN), Andy Corcoran (So., Sumner, IA), and Jonny Worley (Fr., Greene, IA).

NIACC’s women’s 4×800 team rounded out NIACC’s top-10 finishes with a 10th place finish in 10:13.65.  That team consisted of Darcy Nelson (Fr., Lake Mills, IA), Buenneke, Ashley Ubbelohde (So., Waterloo, IA), and Edmond.

Hillary Garvey (Fr., Hudson, IA) was 12th in the 600-meter run with a time 1:43.37, while McKenna Wragge (Fr., Hampton, IA) placed 21st in the high jump with a jump of 1.50 meters (4’11”).

In results from last night, Tanesha Edmond (So., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) placed second in the women’s pentathlon with a score 3333.  She was 63 points behind Tiyi Boone of Delhi Community College (NY).  Trent Smith (Fr., Charles City, IA) placed fourth in the men’s 5000-meter run in a time of 15:19.81.

As a team, the women placed eighth, while the men finished 21st.

NIACC will take a couple of weeks off before starting the outdoor season.  They will start with the Grand View Relays in Des Moines on March 24.
