Late basket lifts Marshalltown past NIACC women, 70-68

MASON CITY, Iowa – Marshalltown’s Courtney Sullivan hit a running jumper with 1.5 seconds left to lift the Tigers to a 70-68 win over NIACC during both team’s regular season finales on Saturday.

NIACC’s Kika Greenlee (Fr., Saint Louis Park, MN) scored a career high 34 points in the loss.  She also grabbed 12 rebounds.  Sadie Pittman (So., Cape Girardeau, MO) scored 14 points, had five rebounds and five steals in her last home game as a Trojan.

NIACC finished the season losing five straight, and will be the six-seed in the Region XI Tournament starting next week.

Marshalltown ended the game on a 10-1 run over the last three minutes.  The Tigers had the lead in the second half for only 35 seconds.

The Trojans had a late chance to win the game after Marshalltown’s Arnisha Thomas was called for traveling after intercepting a deep inbound pass, but a difficult three-point shot by Greenlee rimmed off the basket to seal the win for Marshalltown.

Marshalltown was led by Sullivan and Jasmine Johnson, who both scored 14 points.  Thomas had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

In the game, the Tigers committed 29 turnovers, but outrebounded NIACC 67-47.

NIACC also continued to struggle inside, being outscored in the paint 28-14.  They have been outscored in that area 96-52 in that area over the past three games.

NIACC seemed to be in control with three minutes left when they just finished a run to 67-60, but Marshalltown scored on their last five possessions, and held NIACC to just one made free throw by Greenlee.

The Trojans led by as many as 11 in the second half.  Marshalltown erased that lead with a 10 run with that ended with seven minutes left to make it 59-58.

The game was Pittman’s, Brittany Robinson’s (So., Shellsburg, IA), Jennifer Nelsen’s (So., Mason City, IA), and Jenna Morris’ (So., Radcliffe, IA) last home games of their NIACC careers.

NIACC will play at Iowa Central on Tuesday in the first round of the Region XI Tournament.  The start time for that game is yet to be determined.  Check over the next couple days for when that game starts, as well as the men’s pairing in the Region XI Tournament.
