Op-ed: Globe ignores some candidates and trumpets others

I read the blogs like everyone else and what I read today under the announcement on NIT concerning Chris Watts declaration that he is running against Phil Dougherty for County Commissioner, was terribly upsetting.

We have a local paper in this town, whether it is good or bad it’s what we have, it’s been here for close to one hundred years. In this paper we print public notices, news of record, births and deaths…this is known as a “paper of record” in our community.

Chris Watts, who is a long time resident of this city, has decided to run for County Commissioner. His opponent will be the incumbent Phil Dougherty. That is the very basis of democracy in America….that is what our constitution is all about, it’s why this country was founded…the freedom to chose who you want to represent you in public office. Just how many young lives were lost on foreign soil over the past hundred years so we could chose?

Whereas when Alex Kuhn declared his candidacy for councilman at large this same paper ran it on the front page in color no less, similar attention has been given to other candidates more to the liking of the local editorial board of the Globe-Gazette.  This is no less than despicable on the part of this newspaper. To intently shun Chris Watts candidacy is unthinkable; is this a third world country?

Lee Enterprises owns the Globe-Gazette; they are a company that at one time owned dozens of newspapers across America….and still do. In recent times their stock price has plummeted to 50 cents due to a variety of reasons, for example millions in debt, another being the Internet that operates without brick and mortar locations. I am old enough to remember when this same local paper had publishers and editors that were giants in this community, men of great respect and honor…real community leaders.  We are far from that today, in fact the bridge that once existed between that paper and this community has long since fallen into that river below. It now has been replaced with a drawbridge mentality where the price of entry onto the printed page is in total compliance with the editorial board and complete capitulation to their way of thinking.  For many who think for themselves that is medicine far too bitter to swallow.

To me and many others this snub against Chris Watts is far more serious than anyone can imagine. It smacks of ignorance and intolerance by the staff of this local paper who by any standard or measure…. owe this young man an apology.  After all, his only want is to take part in the  American democratic process.

Wow!! The Globe website already has the story of the actual announcement by Watts. Mentioned him, his family, his career, community efforts, and political issues. No mention on this site yet of Watts announcement. You’re behind the ball, NIT.

Watts is running as a Republican… blew his chances with the NIT-witless. 🙂

Almost a given beermeyer and crew have recruited someone to try to derail Mr. Watts. It will be interesting to see what cronie rises to salute his flag. Still waiting to see a golden statue of himself for the front of city hall to hit the city budget.

I believe that Skipper is still there because he does exactly what the management wants. Several times I have sent in letters to the editor that were not printed. The excuse was that they were to lond. I counted the words and they were right at 200 words or less. Much less than the 300 word allowed.. Then I read other left wind articles that are well over the 300 words. There are several people that are in the paper every other week when most of us can only get in every 60 days. If the message you are trying to express doesn’t agree with their agenda they just don’t print it. If we all quit buying the rag they will go out of business.

This action by the Glob does not surprise me. They have done this for years. They are very biases and have their own “sneakly” agenda. They are a slap in the face to journalism and our citizens.

…as of this post there is a video of Mr Watts announcing his intentions on the Globe site. All I see here on this topic is day old news! I read both sites, I believe the Globe to be more timely in general. I wont go into content, I could go on for hours in agreement/disagreement for both. I am sure the Globe found this story newsworthy but a press-release to announce an announcemnt isnt going to make it most places. Get over it! He’s running, move forward! Support your candidate!

Matt, why the password in order to type in a comment?…Jim

Pretty sure it is just to stop the spambots.

Matt, I like this solution. It’s a pain if I want to post from my phone but otherwise it’s a right click, a left click and another right click to copy it. No hassle at all.

Well said Peter!!
Why is it the Globe continues to let Skipper write for their paper?
Can they not replace this relic with a modern day REPORTER??
Someone that knows how to tell the whole story?

They keep Skipper because he does and reports what and how they want.

I’m not a big advertiser, but I do spend some. I think with the Globe’s philosphy rapidly changing that maybe I should think twice about advertising with them next time.
NIT, have you ever thought about doing some classified sales?
Maybe with the readership you have verse’s the Globe–well maybe–think about it.

This local paper, the Globe Gazette has morphed into little more than a shopper style publication. It is a direct reflection of the managment, and it has become disdainful

He hasn’t even had his press conference yet.

You expect a newpaper to run a story based on someone’s announcement of a press conference where they may/may not announce they are running for an office?

This piece of shit website justs reposts stories from established journalistic sources, and weak op-eds such as this. Its amazing that you (NIT) have advertisers.

Me, I just come here to read everyone idiotic comments.

Good morning, anonymous. Appreciate the morning insult, it goes well with my black coffee.
Let me help you understand that the Globe has written scores of articles about Mr. Watts, essentially trashing him at every turn. They didn’t need any notification or press conference to write those stories, they did them because they wanted to. They will presumably start that baseless process again very soon. They ignore his volunteerism and his dedication of attending nearly every Supervisor meeting for years.
At any rate, I appreciate you joining the 40,000+ other visitors NIT will get this month. Please come back often, there will be some real eye-openers published.

classy comments from somebody “anonymous”. This was a well written Op-Ed, that indeed shows biased reporting by the Globe. If Mr Watts disclosed to that he is going to have a press conference to announce his candidacy or not, then they should have put something in the paper about it. How else would anyone know to show up. I think they would have done it for someone they support. They have had a history of supporting certain candidates in articles that should be news not opinion stories. I think the only way they will learn is if you feel you or your candidate has been unfairly treated by them quit subscribing and quit advertizing with them. We finally have some alternative news sources where your money would be more wisely spent.

You’re a real class act Anonymous. Shouldn’t you be out on a ledge somewhere? Nice language. It seems you don’t like this site, but you take every chance you can to attack it. So do you just get up every morning and think, hmmm, time to bash NIT. Didn’t your mother ever teach you……if you can’t say anything nice.

Can’t even stand to pick up the local newspaper anymore. The pictures are all blurry, it is complete garbage the way they lie, too. Everyone sees it. I haven’t made up my mind yet on this election. I’m glad the whole story is available here on NIT, which I read 2-3 times a day. I hope more info and stories are released on this election, I want to learn more about the candidates and what the county supervisors do.
