Iowa handles Nebraska on the road, 62-53

LINCOLN, NE – Matt Gatens once again led the Iowa Hawkeyes to victory, this time 62-53 over the pesky Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Iowa jumped ahead and never really looked back. Nebraska clawed to within 3 points early in the second half, but Iowa stretched the led to double digits behind some timely 3 point marksmanship of Gatens and two unexpected treys from Devyn Marble. Josh Oglesby also chipped in 8 points as Iowa built a 14 point lead. The Hawks were 8-20 from 3-point range.

Iowa played better defense than usual in keeping Nebraska to just 53 points, but the Huskers shot just 19-52 from the floor in their home gym. The 53 points scored by Nebraska are the fewest by an Iowa opponent in Big Ten play this year. (Previous was 59 twice.) The Hawkeyes are 14-0 the last two seasons when holding opponents to 60 points or less.

Iowa (16-14 overall, 8-9 in Big Ten play) has eight wins in Big Ten play for the first time since the 2006-07 season when the team finished 9-7.  Iowa can finish 9-9 in league play with a home victory over Northwestern this weekend.

Iowa’s three Big Ten Conference road wins this season are the most since the 2005-06 season.
