ROCHESTER, Minn. – Freshman 184-pounder Basil Minto (Fr., Cape Coral, FL) is the lone Trojan remaining in the championship bracket, while two other Trojans are in the hunt for a podium spot at the NJCAA National Championships.
Minto, who is ranked fifth at 184 in the last NJCAA poll, went 3-0 on Friday. He topped Mateo Rojas of Spartanburg Methodist (SC) in a 13-5 major decision in the first round, followed up with a 7-4 decision over 11th-ranked Matt Henry of Muskegon Community College (MI), and won his quarterfinal match with sixth-ranked Caleb Rivera of North Idaho, 9-2.
Minto will go up against third-ranked John McArdle of Middlesex County College on Saturday morning in the semis.
Wismit Moinius (So., Naples, FL) at 141 and Jameel Bryant (So., St. Petersburg, FL) at 174 both went 4-1 on Friday to make it to the consolation quarterfinals. Both wrestlers can finish no worse than eighth.
Andres Torres (Fr., Windsor, CA) at 125 went 1-2 to be the only other Trojan to win a match. Victor Diaz (So., Huntington, CA) at 149, Gibson Metellus (So., Miami, FL) at 157, Justin Head (So., Jewell, IA) at 165, Michael Guerrero (Fr., Eloy, AZ) at 197, and Mark Tiedemann (So., Charles City, IA) at 285 were all eliminated after two matches.
