Chicago man held without bail in shooting of police officer

Liam Ford, Chicago Tribune –

A 21-year-old South Side man charged with shooting a Chicago police officer in the South Shore neighborhood on Sunday was ordered held without bail today.

Cortez Ross, of the 4300 block of South Champlain Avenue, faces attempted first degree murder and aggravated battery charges.

Ross was ordered held without bail in a court hearing midday today before Cook County Criminal Court Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil.

He’s accused of shooting a Calumet Area gang cop in the hand on the 6700 block of South East End Avenue about 4 p.m. following a foot chase.

The 35-year-old officer and two other officers responded to a call of a man with a gun near 68th Street and Stony Island Avenue and saw three males run past their car, so two of the officers got out and chased him, authorities said.

Ross ran toward East End Avenue, and the officer who stayed in the car was able to cut him off, blocking the street he was running on, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Ross then began running back toward the two officers who were on foot, and they both tackled him, Simonton said. While the three were struggling with Ross, trying to arrest him, one of the officers realized Ross had a gun in his hand–police said at the time he pulled it from his waistband–and the officer who had been in the squad car drew his weapon, Simonton

Ross then fired, hitting the officer, an 8-year veteran, who suffered a “through-and-through” gunshot wound to his hand and was treated and released from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The other officer who was struggling with Ross, a female officer, was treated for bleeding and a ringing in her ears.

A second officer shot Ross in the chest, according to authorities, wounding him three times. He was taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment.
