Op-ed: Checks & Balances (by Peter Children)

At the federal level at the highest level the are checks and balances. We have two houses, the Congress and the Senate. Legislation must pass favorably through both in order to become law… and then signed by the President to be finalized.

Not so in communities the size of ours. Here the City Council must stand guard over the financial well being of our treasury. They are the front line in the fight against excessive spending and cronies who want to feed at the public trough.

Take a very close look at your ward representative, are you pleased with what you see sitting there?  If you never voted, then you have little say in how your dollars are spent…because they are your dollars vote or no vote. The same thing holds true with the County Supervisors; ask yourself the same question…are you pleased with what you see and what they have accomplished?  In the end, at the close of the day it is the voters who ultimately decide by voting in those you feel will best represent your concerns.

Last night there was a City Council meeting; it was televised on channel four and started at 7:00 PM; watch it, better yet watch your representative and draw a conclusion, ask yourself if you would vote for this person given the chance to do it again.  Same goes for the Mayor and City Administrator.  These meetings represent democracy in action at the ground level.  Be involved in the community you live in. You don’t have to be present, watch and learn, then voice your opinion. The more you are informed the better this city will be run…….

Matt-why are the comments off on the auto embezzlement article. Are you protecting someone?

I wonder if the person is a greek?

Great article Peter. No name calling, just common sense and facts. Keep up the good work.

I must point out, the third and most important balance we the people have, our Courts. They are the ultimate balance we have to protect from the other two. In all levels of government. It even includes spending if the cause arises.

WOW…What’s the matter with you naysayers (hate that word)…don’t you know Mr. WOW is perfect. He’s so perfect he throws “salutes” under the dash!!!

Peter, while I RARELY have agreed with any of your previous writings in full or partial, this one I can! You didnt resort to name-calling or anything! I am impressed! I agree that if you cant at least vote then the veterans past and present who have fought to preserve that right for you and I, has been wasted.

Those that whine, complain, bitch, and moan, offering no substitute solutions are just as bad in my opinion. Lead, follow, or get out of the way! That is what will move this community, region, and nation forward. It doesnt always have to fall in line with the populous, just do the homework, state your case, and be a part of the solution and not the problem! You will be taken more seriously!

And for the record, I watch, I listen, and I dont like what I see in my fourth ward leadership.

Peter you are right on this article. I think you seen in the last election that the people who voted. They voted pretty decisively. That is your checks and balances at the city level. Unfortunately for you it didn’t go the way you hoped it would. Get over it and move on. New topic please.
