MASON CITY – The City of Mason City may have a new Human Resources Manager.
City Administrator Brent Trout is recommending City Council approval to hire Perry Buffington for the position.
According to a City Hall memo, an “interview team” talked with “several qualified candidates” and chose Buffington.
Trout says that Buffington “has many years of experience with human resources in the private sector and municipal government level.
Buffington would take the job at an annual salary of $73,403.20 and instantly receive 3 weeks of vacation time.
According to a LinkedIn.com portfolio page for Perry Buffington, he is currently employed by the City of Rochester, MN as Benefits and Safety Administrator. He also worked as Human Resources Manager for Holcim for over 2 years and held the same position for IMI Cornelius for 10 years.
I bet those of you who are against the City having a Human Resource Manager have never run a business recently. You have no idea how many laws have to be followed when dealing with hiring and firing employees. You need an employee handbook with frequent updates, someone to keep track of changes in benefits, hand out frequent government notices to employees, on and on ad infinitum. I do all this for a very small business along with other duties, and it’s a monkey on my back. With all the rumblings of job dissatisfaction at City Hall, a Human Resource Manager may be exactly what they need to make sure everyone is treated equally and fairly. I’d rather see them spend the money on this job position than on the remodeling project. I’m very surprised this job position hasn’t already existed. I don’t know how they have functioned without one.
You’re so right. Read up on all the lawsuits that MC had to resolve because the previous HR guy had no clue what to do. He was involved in several obvious instances of sex and age discrimination on hiring and promoting that could have been avoided if the City had a decent HR department. In fact, one of the lawsuits was from within the HR department. And the former City attorney was worthless, too. He didn’t know what oversight or advice to give the HR guy. And they were the same guy!
Mason City really does have a bunch of losers for their leaders. I do enjoy reading about the way the city is being managed and the total disregard for tax money.
I would never live in a city with so much stupidity like yours. You do have some really nice people but not in your elected officials.
This seems to be a very generous salary and vaction package. Does anyone know how it compares to other cities of our size.

is not big enough to justify a human resources manager. we don’t even need a city manager either. all we need is a decent full time mayor working with the department heads.
