To those it may concern this letter is to inform you that due to the decision by Three Eagles Communication to change formats on the radio station 102.7 formerly the Blaze currently Super Hits I along with many others will be participating in active boycott of all Three Eagles radio stations as well as those businesses that chose to advertise with them. We have amassed over 400 members so far in less than 12 hours and will grow rapidly as word spreads. I have no quarrel with the format they chose to replace the Blaze with. My opposition to this decision is based on the format they took away. Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota is left without a single radio station that plays modern rock/alternative music. Another disheartening aspect of this change is the crushing blow it deals to local musicians who won’t have a voice on the airwaves to promote and support them anymore. There is a vibrant rock scene here and we should support it as it brings revenue into our communities. I am certain that anyone who wants to bring a radio station that plays this genre of music back into our midst will find an eager and supportive fan base waiting for them the same way the Blaze had when they started up. A few here have it right. Boycotts and stamping your feet are of no value if the ratings are not there. End of conversation.
Over the last forty years of listening to radio, I have seen people, formats, and owners come and go.
As one of the most prominent figures in Midwestern Radio said many years ago, if you don’t like the content, push the button. His gamble of course worked, and the product he was producing kept his ratings higher than anyone else. He could name his price for adverts in the morning drive slot.
Our market is not so forgiving. We have no 50,000 watt powerhouses, or full time staff 24/7. It’s financially impossible. Our stations don’t get $650 to $1000 per 30 second advert. Why?
We don’t have the audience or ratings. Cry all you want, money talks in the industry, and always has.
Captain Fred is right. Music from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s appeals to listeners of the prized demographic, and the blaze didn’t. Substantial disposable income levels, and proven willingness to spend it, are what radio stations want. Those that get it stay in business. And the blaze format didn’t pan out. This boycott is going nowhere, fast. Btw, the last time I checked, Kansas, Eddy Arnold, Boston, The Carpenters, Alabama, Frank Sinatra, Peter, Paul, and Mary, The Beatles, Diana Ross, and The Partridge family, weren’t “one-hit wonders of the ’60s and ’70s… ” But they still have an audience, which is larger than the 2,500 or so boycotters who want Three Eagles to go back down into a financial sinkhole.
I personally don’t care about the programming change because I don’t and won’t listen to Three Eagles stations, but I am prepared to join in a boycott of their advertisers because of this little folderol.

In short, Three Eagles is threatening its listeners with lawsuits because they protested to the advertisers. Do I, as an American citizen, not have a right to express my opinion to a company? Programming is Three Eagles’ choice. Advertising with them is the choice of the advertisers. No argument. By writing a letter, I would not be coercing them to do anything; I would just be expressing my opinion.

Matt, love your enthusiam. And no they won’t bring the format back. But I certainly hope with all your efforts they will see that businesses aren’t interested in advertising on the new format. The market in this area is overrun with one hit wonders of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. I was very glad to see that one business has now backed out, and I hope many follow suit. It IS all about the music.
Just an update we are nearing 800 members in a little over 3 days and are continuing to grow as word spreads. This boycott is not intended to get the Blaze back because we are all pretty sure that won’t happen. This boycott is intended to show Three Eagles that they severely underestimated the market and if the station was not turning a profit they were not marketing it properly. What most of us object to is the way they handled this. Local radio is the only way that many local artist can be heard and promoted. Local bands bring revenue into the community and the Blaze was great at giving them a voice and a shot. Many thousands of people listened to the Blaze and are now choosing to boycott Three Eagles and are encouraging advertisers not to waste money out of their ad budget on a company that is clearly out of tune with our community.

It’s not just that the music they are playing is crap, it sounds like crap. The reception is horrible. And what’s up with KLSS who is also owned by 3 Eagles? Their reception has been crappy all week too. And with KLSS they play more commercials than actual music. I say the heck with them all. Bye Bye 3 Eagles, you may as well hang it up, join the globe and file for bankruptcy protection.

The Blaze was the only station in the area that played that type of music. I have already found 3 other stations that play the type of music that Super Hits (the station that Three Eagles switched to) plays.
And due to the high population of us younger people in the area from the fact that NICC and Waldorf colleges are here in the area, it would be nice to have a station that plays the type of music that we listen to.

Why are you still listening to terrestrial radio stations? Go to Pandora, SlackerRadio, any of the other multitudes of stations. Boycotts are for companies that kill and maim people, not radio stations that stop playing your favorite song.
Get a life and look up the definition of the word terrestrial before trying to use it in a sentence correctly.

Well, I like the new format. They are playing music from the 60’s thru the 80’s which just so happens to be my favorites, esp the 80’s. Finally an FM station that is playing decent music!
Please bring back the blaze it was the only station I listen to I can’t stand the one that’s on now it makes me depressed when I turn it on in the morning and I realize it’s not the same it really sucks please please bring the blaze back it’s the only thing I listen to when I’m at work now I can’t listen to anything else because the only choices are is ughhh country or hip hop and I hate both of them
Radio stations, for the most part, are “for profit” businesses. Advertisers look at the size of the audience. (Paying attention here, NIT?)
If the “Blaze” (102.7) were turning a profit for itself and boosting the advertisers’ sales, it would NOT have switched to a (potentially) more profitable format. Pure and simple.
If the audience is too small (500? 1,000? 5,000?), the radio station and the advertisers are NOT going to support a business that is LOSING money. So “boycotting” most likely will NOT convince the “powers-that-be” to reverse their decisions.
And for the record, I LIKED the NEWER hard-rock format of the “Blaze”. And I too, will miss it. But if I owned it, and it was losing money, well…
They ran the same ads from the rest of thier crap stations. This is just proof that we live in a podunk town. My stepdad likes oldies and can’t stand the new format.
It’s all about ratings, if the ratings are not there it is going to go.
Ratings are what make advertising dollars come in. So, there obviously isn’t enough listernership to make it work. Boycotting will only make it worse.

I have sent my email voicing my frustration and can only hope something, somewhere could change. Streaming non-local radio stations through my phone isn’t the same as listening to 102.7 The Blaze. How can I have a Morning Hangover NOW!!
