CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Anthony James’s three-pointer at the buzzer lifted the University of Northern Iowa men’s basketball team to a 65-62 victory over No. 13-ranked Creighton in front of 6,910 fans in the McLeod Center.
UNI (16-9 overall, 6-7 MVC) turned the ball over only two times in the game and scored its first-ever victory over a ranked opponent in the McLeod Center. UNI is 1-1 all-time vs. ranked opponents in the McLeod Center – a building that opened in 2006.
Creighton (21-3 overall, 11-2 MVC) had tied the game at 62-62 on a three-pointer by Antoine Young with 4.6 seconds left.
The Panther victory snapped an 11-game win streak by the Bluejays.
UNI will travel to Wichita State on Wednesday for a matchup with the Shockers at 7 p.m. in Koch Arena.
NOTES: James led UNI with 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half … Young led all scorers with 23 points … Doug McDermott tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds … UNI drained 11 three-pointers, while Creighton was only 5-of-16 from 3-point land … Creighton’s two lowest point totals this season have come against UNI (62 and 63) … UNI is 7-2 against ranked opponents since the 2001-02 season … UNI’s last win over a ranked opponent prior to tonight came when the Panthers knocked off No. 1 Kansas in the 2010 NCAA Tournament .
