Mason City needs to pick up pace to become Blue Zone Community

by Matt Marquardt –

MASON CITY – According to a Blue Zones Project Scoreboard, Mason City needs to pick up the pace to solidify itself as a strong Blue Zone Community candidate.

The chart shows the current level of support for the top 100 cities based on citizen signups on this website or by texting BZP to 772937 and is updated every 24 hours. It is based upon a percentage of the community’s population that has pledged support.

Mason City is on the list in about the middle of the pack, at 15.58% of the citizens that have pledged support.  St. Ansgar is currently #1 at over 62% of its citizens pledging support.  Riceville, Osage, Spencer and Algona are also high on the list.

“Citizen support is an important selection factor and we will measure that support by the percentage of residents that pledge to participate if their hometown is chosen,” a description of that chart says.

Of the over 900 communities in Iowa, ten will be chosen to receive direct support from the Blue Zones Project Team in their quest to become Blue Zones Communities.

Up to 10 finalist communities will be announced Feb. 10 and will host site visits from Feb. 27 to March 16.  Over the next five years, ten Iowa communities will be named Blue Zones demonstration sites.
