No. 17 Iowa Lakes drops No. 12 NIACC

ESTHERVILLE, Iowa – No. 17 Iowa Lakes gave No. 12 NIACC its third straight dual loss on Thursday night, dropping the Trojans 30-16.

Wismit Moinius (So., Naples, FL), Victor Diaz (So., Huntington, CA), Gibson Mettellus (So., Miami, FL) and Basil Minto (Fr., Cape Coral, FL) all recorded victories for NIACC.  NIACC won three of the seven matches that took place.  The Trojans did not send a wrestler to the mat in the 125 and 133 rounds, while Iowa Lakes didn’t have a wrestler at 157.

Sixth-rated Moinius won a 12-7 decision over Skyler Rice at 141 to lead off and start a three bout win streak for the Trojans, which turned a 12-0 deficit to a 13-12 lead halfway through the dual.  At 149, Diaz had little trouble controlling Travis Johnson, and won a 19-8 major decision.

Mettellus ended the run by receiving the win by forfeit at 157.

Iowa Lakes won four of the last five matches, and would have ran the table if it wasn’t for a late reversal by Minto at 184.  While trailing to ninth-ranked Nick Lawrence 2-0, seventh-ranked Minto recorded a reversal with five seconds left to send the match into overtime.  Minto ended up winning 4-2.

Iowa Lakes’ Kolby Baier won a 6-3 decision over Justin Head (So., Jewell, IA) at 165 and Thomas Moman edged seventh-ranked Jameel Bryant (So., St. Petersburg, FL) 5-4 at 174.  The Lakers finished the 18-3 run with a pair of pins. Eighth-ranked James Doyle pinned Mike Hale (Fr., Garner, IA) in 1:29 during the 197 bout, and sixth-ranked Matt Wyss pinned Mark Tiedemann (So., Charles City, IA) in 2:28 for the win at 285.

NIACC is finished with duals this season, and went 1-3 in duals this year.  They will not be in action until February 11 for the NJCAA North Central District Wrestling Tournament, which will be held on the NIACC campus.
