Former Trax Bar building demolished Tuesday

by Jody Spear –

MASON CITY – The building that once stood at 1828 S. Taft and last known as Trax Bar and Grill, is now a pile of crushed bricks, broken glass and unwanted restaurant supplies.

A large excavator and second bucket sat motionless Tuesday morning after tearing down the building that over the years has been the home of several businesses.

Before Trax Bar and Grill owners, Robert and Cheryl Thompson, owned the property, it was also called Big D’s Sports Bar, Max Seas and Branding Iron Catering.

Debris was being loaded into a large dump truck Tuesday afternoon, to be hauled away.

So, why was it demolished??? Any future plans for the land??

The owners turned the restaurant and the house next door back to the bank and the bank is trying to sell both properties for redevelopment. Heard the house is going to be moved. The restaurant was in really bad shape-leaking roof and full of mold.

We ate there when I was a kid. Very good memories of the great food, atmosphere and a good place for a family to go. Sad. And yes, the onion rings….yummmmm

Actually, it was known as the Country House. Best onion rings ever. Bob & Donna Ransom were great hosts and very nice people. They made you feel really welcome.

Sad to see the Demolition Mentality is still alive and well in Mason City. When known as the Country Inn, this place had the best onion rings. Hopefully, the future use of this vacant lot won’t be a parking lot for junk cars.

The place was a dump and an eyesore. Building had been for sale for years and nobody wanted it. Nothing “sad” about tearing down a leaky, moldy, dilapidated, rat hole.
