IRVING, Texas – Iowa State junior guard Tyrus McGee was honored by the Big 12 Conference today for his performance on the basketball court last week. A native of Stringtown, Okla., McGee averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and was 11-of-20 from 3-point range to earn Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors, announced today by the league office.
McGee earned the award by a select panel of media covering the conference. It’s the fourth time a Cyclone earned the rookie of the week award by the league this year. Royce White won it twice (Nov. 14, Jan. 9), and Chris Babb was the recipient on Nov. 28.
McGee was instrumental in a pair of Iowa State victories last week, as the sharpshooter broke his previous career highs in scoring in both contests. He poured in 17 points, was 5-of-9 from 3-point range and grabbed a career-high nine boards in Iowa State’s come-from-behind win over Oklahoma State. McGee hit a key 3-pointer to tie the game at 68-68 with 0:20 seconds left. He then made a defensive play on the other end to give the ball back to Iowa State, stripping the ball off Markel Brown’s leg to set up the Cyclones’ buzzer-beating victory.
He followed that game with a strong effort in a road win at Texas Tech, setting career highs in both points (20) and 3-pointers (6). He played 57 minutes during the week without committing a turnover.
