MASON CITY- The Mason City Fire Department and Local Law Enforcement Officials met for yet another hockey showdown on Saturday night in the 2nd Annual “Battle of the Badges” at the North Iowa Ice Arena.
Hundreds of North Iowans packed the stands to watch Mason City’s finest face off in a charitable game benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Mason City Police Chief Michael Lashbrook was in attendance to support the Police Department. He told North Iowa Today: “The event was a success last year and it is this year. It’s great to be here and support the community.”
Last year, the benefit raised over $15,000. “We’re hoping to top that tonight” said Make-A-Wish Volunteer Randy Black. Last year’s Battle was the most profitable one-time event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the State of Iowa.
In order to boost contributions, this year’s event included an auction for 2 signed jerseys, a raffle, and t-shirt sales.
North Iowa Today caught up with Cerro Gordo County Deputy Matt Klunder during the games 1st intermission. Klunder played defense this year, he started playing hockey in preparation for last year’s event. “It’s a great way to give back to the community” he said before returning to a fast-paced second period.
Mason City Fire Chief Bob Platts, also in attendance told North Iowa Today: “We have a great turnout. They told us the stands hold 1500 [people]. If I were a guessing man, I’d say we have about that. It doesn’t matter who wins, we are raising good money here. It’s for the kids.”
The Make-A–Wish Foundation focuses on granting wishes for children with medical needs. It is the largest wish granting organization in the world.
