Rash of vandalism strikes Mason City

MASON CITY – It appears a rash of vandalism has struck Mason City.

NorthIowaToday.com received notice from two readers that windows were being shot out around the city.

The Mason City Police Department was contacted about the situation. Officer Mike McKelvey told NorthIowaToday.com that “the majority of the vandalism appears to have happened on Sunday thru Tuesday nights in these areas: N Penn Ave (State Street north to 7th Street NE and nearby side streets), highland area, random locations along Hwy 122 West, Hwy 65 North, SE, SW.”

McKelvey said that the suspects targeted “parked car windows and business windows, usually along a roadway. The suspects apparently are using a projectile to break the windows. From the amount of damage, the suspect(s) would probably be in a vehicle while they shoot out windows. Some of the damage has occurred between 7pm – 4 am on the various nights.”

Anyone with information is urged to call the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636.

Anyone with info is requested to contact police or Crimestoppers.

jim someone should high five you in the face! child abuse is never okay!!!

give parants the right to paddle their child, and the vandalism will come to an end. I for one believe in the saying,( spare the rod spoil the child) also give the teachers the right to correct them….

So..verity…you say there is nothing for kids to do?? So vandalism is accepted? Thats pathetic..how about homework? Studying? Family activities? Destroying others property is ok in your eyes because of what you think is a lack of things to do?

First
NO damaging others propert/stuff not accepted at all. Second read my post no where in there did i say vandalism was ok. My first line was the blame goes between parent and child. I was just stating that there is not much to do as a teen in this town. Parents need to be aware. But according to you, you must have family activies every night.
I was growing up my parents divorced my dad worked out of town not every family can do that. Now that being said I did find better things to do then vandalism cause i just don’t believe in that I was rised better and for the fact my father would have beat me within inch of my life.
Before anyone freaks out I never got beat as a child. Just stating on something like that he just might.

It’s important to remember that this may not be kids doing this. Assumptions are never a good thing. I do agree, a curfew in place would take care of a lot of vandalism issues in Mason City. Those that have had damage need to contact their council person and get the ball rolling. One has to wonder, if this is kids doing this, why aren’t the parents being parents? With all of the young parents with so many issues lately in this area, it’s sad to say, it’s probably kids/young adults that do not have a care in the world, let alone a conscience.

This has been going on for about two or more years now in that area. I get the general impression this is more than just juvenile activity. But that does not let the parents off the hook. They must have learned that behavior from somewhere.

I’ve been saying for years and years that Mason City needs a curfew. I’m so sick of rotten kids being out and about doing nothing but causing trouble. The park has had its share of vandalism, businesses, parked cars, etc. Sorry but I feel if the parents aren’t going to do their job and keep the kids off the street, then it’s time the mayor and council do something about it. Get a curfew. Maybe a few tickets written to kids that break the curfew and their parents have to be responsible for it, maybe then they will keep their kids at home.

It’s a shame. I see young people walking the streets all the time up here in the north end. Most of them smoking cigarette’s even though it’s against the law. I see the police drive by them all the time. Another real issue is they walk in the traveled portion of the streets in the dark and it is just a matter of time before they get hit. The sidewalks have been clear but they still walk in the street. We need a curfew in this town but they fight it every time it comes up because the parants really don’t want them home.

Hey D DO U THINK U R A TARGET?

I HAVE LIVED BY ROSSEVELT FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS I HAVE HAD WINDOWS BROKE OUT ON FOUR DIFFERET TIMES I HAVE HAD A CAR STODEN.I LIVED UP ON THE NORTHEND AND NEVER HAD ANY TROBLE THERE SO IT DONT MATTER WERE YOU LIVE

This is part parent and kid to blame. I just get sick of the fact all you here about is how kids are out just walking around causing problems no mater what time.
But let’s face it here there is nothing in this town for a kid to do and less in winter. Heck theres not much for adults to do in this town. Are mayor has proven that. Beer anyone!!

C’mon kids, do you realize you’re giving your generation a horrible name? windows are expensive and take time to replace. just wait till your windows get broke out then we’ll see whos laughing.

Mothers and dads. Do you know where your kids are? It’s unbelievable the number of young folks out in the wee hours of the night and early morning. They surely aren’t heading for work like you and I are. Kids out looking for trouble and causing it. Hard working people are to busy to look for mischief.
