Iowa rolls No. 13 Michigan 75-59

Scott Dochterman,  CR Gazette –

IOWA CITY — Iowa overpowered No. 13 Michigan in every possible way Saturday in a 75-59 win at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

With the win, the Hawkeyes (11-8, 3-3 Big Ten) matched their win total from last season. The win was Iowa’s second over a ranked Big Ten opponent and ends a six-game losing streak to Michigan (14-4, 4-2 Big Ten).

Iowa posted a 42-29 with 16 minutes left in the game, but the Wolverines cut the deficit to six. Iowa then posted a 10-0 run to push the lead back to 16 with 10:43 left in the game. Iowa led by at least 11 points the remainder of the game.

Matt Gatens led Iowa with 19 points. Devyn Marble had 13 and Aaron White added 11. Trey Burke led Michigan with 19 points.

The win ended a two-game slide by Iowa, in which the Hawkeyes were beaten by a combined 63 points against Ohio State and Michigan State.

It’s the only time this season the teams are scheduled to play one another. Iowa plays at Purdue, which edged the Hawkeyes 79-76 in the Big Ten opener, on Tuesday.

HERE’S THE FIRST-HALF RECAP:

Iowa guard Devyn Marble drilled a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the Hawkeyes a 33-23 halftime lead over No. 13 Michigan this afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa’s defense has swarmed the Wolverines, forcing eight turnovers, snagging eight steals and allowing Michigan to shoot just 34.8 percent from the floor. The Hawkeyes have held top scorer Tim Hardaway Jr. to just three points.

Michigan (14-3, 4-1 Big Ten) hit just 3-of-16 3-point shots.

Iowa sophomore Zach McCabe scored the game’s first six points, all in the inside. Marble leads the Hawkeyes with eight points, while Josh Oglesby has seven. Matt Gatens and McCabe both have six points.

Marble also has four assists, four rebounds, a steal and no turnovers for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa led Michigan by 10 in last year’s game in Iowa City, only to lose in overtime. The teams have played three consecutive overtime games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
