Mason City Police Chief Michael Lashbrook said today that the department’s investigation into the suspected birth and unknown location of a infant has “reach an impasse.”
In a press release, Lashbrook said that requests for public assistance “has yielded little information that would give hope to locating a baby or to its well-being.”
Lashbrook also said that the MCPD is still requesting information “in hopes of a breakthrough.” Anyone with information should call the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636.
An exhaustive search was conducted by the MCPD in and around the area of the Iowa Workforce Development offices on South Pierce over the last two days. Police searched sewer and sewage lines, rooftops, neighborhoods and commercial business areas with no positive results. “The search even extended to the North Iowa Landfill,” Lashbrook said.
Assistance was received from multiple personnel from the Charles City Police Department, North Iowa Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) which included two cadaver dogs, North Iowa Landfill personnel, Mason City Operations and Maintenance Division, Mason City Fire Department, Navratil Excavating, Iowa Workforce Development personnel and the Cerro Gordo County Medical Examiner.

I’m not saying the MCPD is involved with the baby. What I am saying is they don’t give any the full attention and detail that it needs, unless one of their officers are involved. They are going to let the public do all the work of locating the baby. While they harras citizen. The MCPD is fully corrupted. And if you are an officer and you do turn in other officers for wrong doing, you are fired. Talk about bad public relations.

I can’t stand this. That baby would have needed life support, a respirator….something. Let’s face it. that baby was born, couldn’t breath and instantaneously died. The stupid girl could tell them where the baby is so it could have a decent funeral. I HATE THAT GIRL. SHES A SELFISH WITCH!!!!!! My feelings won’t change. She should be tried for neglect at the very least. You can’t just dispose of a human corpse without consequences… I still think the baby was flushed and they just can’t find it in the sewer and shes too ashamed to admit she flushed her baby. A baby that small can be put in so many places, storm drains, ponds, dumpsters may not find it till spring. The dogs will only work if they are in the right place and this is searching for a needle in the hayfield.
She is a really sick person. Prison isn’t good enough for her. She obviously has something to hide because any other mother who misscarried like that would have been screaming for help, not trying to hide what happened.
The testing proved that she gave birth, she should be able to be held for child endangerment until she produces the child. Just because a body hasn’t been found is not grounds enough to release her scott free. We in this instance have to beleive it was a live birth until an autopsy proves otherwise.
I don’t see why they can’t hold her on a material witness charge until she talks. As far as anyone knows she is the only witness to the birth of the child. And per your other statement, I agree that the child should have rights. It should be assumed that the child was born alive until proven otherwise. That gives the child just as many rights as any other citizen, and kidnapping would be indicated since it’s whereabouts are unknown. Why are her rights being protected so much more than that of a child that cannot speak up for themselves??
This is so typical of Mason City police and the court system. People go to jail for the simplest things, but dispose of a baby, eh, no big deal. This is ridiculous! She obvisouly was pregnant, obvisouly had the baby, and obviously disposed of it. C’mon get off your butts and arrest her and hold her until she starts talking. What’s the problem here????

The problem here is the number of people who are willing to toss aside the accused’s constitutional rights – the same ones we all enjoy (for now…) just because of what the accused is alleged to have done. Yes, the non-cooperation of the accused is abhorrent and unconscionable. If the government’s justice system doesn’t get her, karmic justice will. Give it time.
What of the childs rights? If it was a live birth, did (does) it not have rights as well?
She is the sole person who can tell where either the child or it’s body is. She was the mother, therfore she should be held responsible for it’s safety and the fact she will not cooperate with law enforcement shows guilt, otherwise if she had nothing to hide she would have asked for help immediatly not clam up.

I strongly suggest they find something to lock up the mother on…..maybe one or her old warrants? Then get her a lawyer, and get her to talk. This is kind of like the Casey Anthony case. Until there is a body, hands are tied. Good idea to bring Nancy Grace in….she wouldn’t put up with this crap for long! Cadaver dogs, search her house, hell, stop the welfare payments for her other kid! If you keep the money from her, she may talk!

For all those that are replying to this article and bitching about the police. I work across the street from workforce dev. and I have seen two people searching since monday morning (two city workers other then police.) Don’t blame this on them when you aren’t willing to help yourselves.
Has anyone bothered to check the sewer? That was a pretty small baby. Might have been able to fit down the toilet.

What bothers me is them letting her out after she ran from them the last 8 months on warrants. So ya think she is going to be around when they do find the body.

I cannot help but think about whether or not the public would be as outraged if this baby would have been 12 weeks gestation instead of 29-32 and aborted. Where are the pro-choice people now? Using that point of view..it was this mother “choice” to throw this baby away. A beating heart is a beating heart. This baby deserved a chance at life and should have been dropped at a safe haven. I hope they find this baby and are able to bring justice in this situation and get the mother the help she needs.

I am NOT saying this is what I believe but what she could say. She can claim that the cord is all she gave birth to. And even if they prove that there was a baby born they need a body to see if the lungs are inflated to see if they baby was alive or still born.

If I followed this story correctly, the cleaning crew at Workforce Developement,on Saturday called the police with what they had found. I don’t think that building is open to the public on Saturday,therefore this baby was born,aborted or whatever on Friday or someone would have discovered it earlier. Secondly, this woman does not have to talk to anyone and if it looks like she is going to be subject to intense interviews she has the right to an attorney. Game is over at this point until the baby is found.
She has the 5th Amendment right not to incriminate herself, but she can exercising that right from behind bars in jail. At this point, not revealing the whereabouts of a known premature born infant places her at the child endangerment level, and probably kidnapping as well. Parents that deliberately withhold their children from receiving medical attention when they need it are charged for endangerment and manslaughter if the child dies. Sometimes homicide, depending on the circumstances. It’s reasonable to conclude at this time that the baby is in DIRE NEED OF MEDICAL ATTENTION, so at the least she needs to be arrested and the criminal procedures need to be followed. I’m sure the police have their strategy for dealing with fragile young Chanel, but it hasn’t worked thus far, so they need to show her the reality of not cooperating more clearly from the inside of an isolation chamber. Also, considering that she is violating the Libertarian tenets of being free as long as you don’t hurt another human being, I would also suggest that she be placed in psychiatric care, and possibly given psychotropic medications to loosen her up a bit. Important to note: I do not advocate involuntary administration of medications upon sole individuals, UNLESS, their actions are resulting in harming other people, which in this case…they clearly are.

I don’t know that much about the law, but can’t they arrest her on something? at this point, couldnt they call her an accessory to murder, or if the baby was alive, is child endangerment possible, not getting a newborn medical care seems like endangerment to me…probably pretty hard to proceed with no proof…. but the evidence they do have should be enough to hold her in custody you would think…… also I thank them (MCPD) for the work they do….. their jobs cant be easy.
They are trying to mollycoddle her fragile psyche’. I say enough’s enough. Arrest her and put in her a cell while she’s mulling her options over. I’m sure that a medical doctor could examine her (against her will) and determine if she recently gave birth. Once that determination was made, then MCPD could charge her with child endangerment, and possibly accessory to murder. Since it’s possible the baby could have been born alive, she can be tagged with the accessory to murder, 2nd degree murder (crime of the moment) or 1st degree murder if she had every intention of killing it. It’s possible as well, that it came out stillborn, but the girl still needs to be charged with something, just for handling this in such a heinous manner and being uncooperative. Start with interference with official acts. Get a court order to subpoena her before a grand jury and find her in contempt if she doesn’t cooperate. I hope they are checking her system for drugs and alcohol, because it’s possible she deliberately ingested drugs and alcohol in order to force an abortion. Never been a fan of MCPD, lost faith in them a long time ago. So sad that this baby can’t be found just because they won’t arrest the mother & make her tell ALL!!!!
Even if they arrested her, how would they make her tell all? I understand that this is a sad situation, but I know several police officers as well as the chief and I know that this is making them as sick as it’s making us. You can’t force someone to tell you something otherwise Osama would have been dead a month after we invaded Afghanistan. It’s not the police’s fault that the law binds their hands. Remember they are not “the law”, they are simply “the enforcers”. The police department is bound by the same laws that protect our rights on a day to day basis.

You really expect the MCPD to do something. they covered up the murder of the jody husentrut case. Because their own officers were involved. They not going to do anything but protect their own butts.

Did anyone think to look in those ponds near Big Blue? If someone helped her dispose of the baby, I’m guessing throwing it in the nearby lake would be the quickest way to get rid of it. Gruesome thought, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Yes, they have not searched every car, truck and railroad car that has passed through town to make sure the child is not there. I am sure they have not checked all the aircraft into and out of MCW.
Did you help the assembled team sort through the sewage plant intake? Did you help them search the landfill?
Help them out, suggest other avenue they can take.
