Update: Law Enforcement Officials Conduct Investigation into Shooting Incident in Delaware County

Dundee, IOWA — On January 5, 2012 at approximately 5:07 PM, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to 1749 120th Street in Dundee, Iowa in response to a 911 call. The caller indicated that a female at that location was suffering from a gunshot wound.

Deputies arrived and found Amy Hettinger, age 41, with a gunshot wound. Hettinger later died as a result of that injury.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation conducted an investigation and it was determined that Hettinger was shot by a 10 year old child inside the house who was handling a loaded handgun at the time. The handgun belonged to another family member.

An autopsy has been conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office and the results of the investigation indicate this was an accidental shooting. The case will be forwarded to the Delaware County Attorney’s Office for review.
