OSKALOOSA, Iowa – Freshman Basil Minto (Cape Coral, FL) won the 184-class title, while Wismit Moinius (So., Naples, FL) and Victor Diaz (So., Huntington, CA) both recorded top-five finishes at the William Penn Open.
Minto, who is ranked eighth in the NJCAA at the 184 weight class, went 3-0 for the tournament. He started with a pin of Christian Alcantara of Triton Community College in 4:13, and beat Truman State’s Nate Seiler in a 5-1 decision to get to the finals. In the championship, Minto edged Missouri Baptist’s Weston Keleher 3-2 to take his first championship as a Trojan.
Moinius, ranked fifth at 141 in the NJCAA, placed third in that class by going 5-1 for the tournament. After getting a first round bye, Moinius beat William Penn’s Tyler Schneider 9-2 to get to the quarterfinals. Iowa State’s Brandon Jones then bounced Moinius out of the championship bracket in a 3-1 decision.
In the consolation bracket, Moinius defeated teammate Juan Munoz (Fr., Phoenix, AZ) in a 19-2 technical fall, and then bested Schneider again, 10-2. He then won a 3-0 decision over Tyrell Galloway of Maryville University in the consolation semis and then topped Adam Perrin of Northern Iowa 10-7 in the third place match.
Diaz finished fifth in the 149-pound class. He dropped a tough opening match to Almondo Connor, Jr. of Maryville in a 3-2 double overtime loss. Diaz then knocked out Gibson Metellus (So., Miami, FL) 4-2 in the consolation bracket before pinning Austin Southards of Cornell College in 4:58 to get to the consolation semis.
Carey Cloud of William Penn won a 4-2 decision to send Diaz to the fifth-place game, where Diaz beat Dillon Heiney of Truman State by forfeit.
NIACC is next scheduled for a dual against Waldorf College on Tuesday, starting at 7 p.m.
