Former 1-term Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney arrived in Mason City on Thursday, December 29th for a town hall meeting at the Music Man Square.
Romney was greeted by the national media and a large crowd at least equal to the biggest town hall crowds Mason City has seen this political season. On Wednesday, Newt Gingrich’s crowd was just about as big.
Romney was introduced by his wife, Ann, (pictured) who stood on a chair in the middle of the square and told about raising their sons. She then handed the microphone to Governor Romney who gave a speech, starting with analogies between Iowa and the song “America the Beautiful.”
Romney said “I’m fighting for the middle class” and that the rich are “doing just fine.” He also said the poor “have a safety net” and that America is a “generous nation.”
He also said that he would make the U.S. military the most powerful in the world so that “no one would test it.” He said the navy and air force are the smallest and most out of date they have been in decades.
Romney has been criticized for spending less time in Iowa than some of his rivals leading up to the January 3rd Republican caucuses.
