Marsters, Nelson, Weaver depart city council

Jeff Marsters, Don Nelson and Max Weaver all said their goodbyes to the Mason City City Council Tuesday night.

All three were awarded certificates for their service to the community. Mayor Eric Bookmeyer acknowledged that the three out-going council members and himself “did not always see eye-to-eye on many issues,” but that he never doubted that they always had the best interests of Mason City as their goal.

In other business, Mayor Bookmeyer mentioned the Blue Zone initiative that Mason City is involved in. He said that there will be a walk held on Thursday, December 22 where photos will be taken to submit to the Blue Zones Committee that decides if Mason City will become a Blue Zone Community. He asked citizens to meet at the Music Man Square at noon and wear blue. Two walks will be held, a 1K or 2K.

The city awarded a certificate to a young lady, Andrea Kauffman for being named America’s Homecoming Queen. (See video.)

Councilman Travis Hickey brought forward an initiative to clean up Mason City’s neighborhoods. He had a slide show with pictures of broken-down or unsightly homes in the community. Staff would be directed to develop a plan by February 7, 2012. That measure passed 5-1 with Max Weaver voting against it.
