WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the Johnson County Fire Department has been awarded $84,228 and the Newton Fire Departments has been awarded $10,450 by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. The program improves the capability of firefighters to respond to fires and strengthens operations and safety. Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations committee, which funds Homeland Security.
“First responders are vitally important to the safety and wellbeing of our communities,” said Harkin. “This grant will be used to improve the operations and abilities of the firefighters and these grants are well deserved.”
