The Cerro Gordo County Compensation Board met Monday evening and recommended a 2.5% pay increase for elected county officials.
The board was chaired by former Mason City Mayor Tom Jolas. Other on the board were Dave Theiss, Rich Finstad, John Stone and Bill Cody.
“This is not the year to be aggressive,” Jolas said.
The Cerro Gordo Coutny Supervisors will take the recommendation and make a final decision later.
In Cerro Gordo County, the county attorney (11th), the auditor (12th), the recorder (10th) the sheriff (11th) and the treasurer (10th) are loosely paid near the counties’ rank in population (13th). The Supervisors are the sixth-highest paid in the state, making $45,331 each.
The supervisors could actually vote themselves a pay decrease if they feel so inclined.

Hmmn. Ironic that Jolas is commenting since he was the guy who for years pushed up those salaries saying we had to stay competitive. When was the last time a Sherif, auditor, recorder or supervisor quit their job? Can’t remember when. Not likely to happen either . Can you think of any other counties that pay more that they would move to and try to get reelected?This perversion of trying to maintain pay scales is very similar to corporate America boards that set the ceo salaries and bonuses. Where else could any of those supervisors work and get paid that kind of money for those hours?

How about an Iowa minimum wage raise to $15 an hour if you’re over 18 yrs old. That’s what it takes to live in poverty in MC. With Alliant, House Payment & Water bill. My last water bill was $120!!!! For 3 people in the house, 1 of which works out of town all week. That’s far beyond ridiculous for water!!!!
I absolutely support a $10 minimum wage increase effective immediately. Any job that I offer people, I never would think of paying them any less than that. My housecleaner I paid $20 an hour, so why should people working for mega corporate giants such as McDonald’s or Taco Bell get less than $10? btw… I can no longer afford a housecleaner.
I’m having trouble understanding what Jolas means by “this is not the year to be aggressive”. Does this mean Jolas wants a pay increase for the Board or not? Can the author of the article please clarify as to what that statement means more specifically? Thanks.
Peter, Mr. Jolas meant that a lower wage increase is warranted due to the tough economic climate.
