At about 5:27 am Monday morning, Mason City police were informed that Cheri Rae Decker, 18, of Mason City had left her four month old child alone at her residence and had gone out for the evening.
Officers immediately proceeded to her residence and verified that the child was OK, but was in fact alone.
Decker was located shortly thereafter at another residence in Mason City, but claimed her child was being watched by a relative. Officers continued to investigate the incident with assistance from the Iowa Department of Human Services and determined Decker had not made any specific arrangements to have the child cared for. Decker was charged with minor consumption, interference with official acts and child endangerment.
Decker was transported to the Cerro Gordo County Jail and is being held on a $2000.00.

I will tell you all something. I agree that kids should not have kids. But, not all kids who have kids are bad parents. I can name 30+ people who are old enough to have children, and fail at the responsibility that comes along with it. I do not condone having children so young. But the fact is that it happens. I myself am a young mother of two. I graduated high school. I attend college. I am also in college to become a physician. I have a home, a job, and soon a degree in bio-med. Don’t blame all young moms just because this simple minded, non-responsible girl decided that she wasn’t a mom for the night.
I’m sick over the fact that this idiot works at a daycare!! No wonder I chose to live on one income so my kids wouldn’t have to go to daycare. It’s a rough ride barely making ends meet, but FAR better than taking the chance that some tard like this would be responsible for my children 8 hours a day. Don’t daycares do interviews? MAybe if a screw is loose, they shouldn’t hire out of desperation. Better to have a small, responsible staff than to have POS’s like this employed there.
You have to have a license to drive a car, or to ride a motorcycle or moped. You even have to have a license to fish!! But anyone can be a parent. Sad. When you become a parent, everything else is second, your child comes FIRST. Apparently she didn’t get the memo.

This girl obviously needs some growing up to do. She is lucky that the baby was found alive and unharmed. Haven’t you heard of birthcontrol, there are ways to prevent this especially if you are not ready to grow up and give up alot for that child that you brought into this world. The scary thing is that she is taking care of other peoples children in a childcare center.
DHS is a joke, they will keep the parents and kids together in all but the most extreme circumstances. I don’t know what happened to the mom, she was a good kid, probably just not ready to grow up. Hopefully, the parents can help encourage her to do the right thing until she is ready to be a parent full time.

How many times does things have to be reported to DHS before the really do something about it. Was this girl reported before and DHS did nothing, would not surprise me that is how they seem to be. If you are not ready to be a Mom then give the child up for adoption instead of harming them.

This girl will have an uphill struggle to get her child back. DHS does not take these cases lightly and rightfully so.We all need to look out for the welfare of innocent children like this. I had my daughter at 16 in Mason City and struggled and I am doing great now but it was a lesson on how to grow up and fast. So the point? If she can’t grow up then take the baby so it can have a chance at life.

I just can’t believe the way the world is now a days. There’s people who can’t have kids and she’s going out to drink leaving her baby alone. This makes me sad. I hope she get her baby taken away from her. She is too young, I am 25 and am aware that I am not financially ready for a kid, I feel I am responsible enough, but to be honest there are things in my life, like cooking 3 meals a day, having a place big enough for a kid and keeping it clean enough and baby proof for one (not that I live like a pig) that I know I just couldn’t do right now working and being in school and all. And though I don’t want to judge, but just by statistics, that baby was probably not planned.
i bet the baby wasn’t planned but we don’t know the story of why she became pregnant or the terms of how the baby was able to be conceived. it could of been a fail of birth control or not using any at all or some other very bad way.

i agree angie. i do the same when it comes to my kids. i won’t even let them play out side by them selves. and they are ten and eight. i am either outside with them or my fiancee is out side with them. i have been investigated by dhs some legit some not. i have been threatened to have DHS called on me by three girls here in MC just because they dont like me. now to me that is BS and if they do call DHS on me i smell lawsuits.
I was charged with the same charge and the accusations where not true and the charges where dropped. What (WTF) happened to innocent until proven guilty. Instead of judging others maybe you need to only judge yourself!!!
