Mason City woman leaves child in clothes dryer as “form of punishment”

MASON CITY – On Monday, December 19th, 2011, Mason City police department investigators arrested Mallory Ann Hakes, 25, of Mason City  on charges of child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor.

The arrest is a result of a joint investigation with the Department of Human Services from a report of suspected child abuse.

Investigators determined that Hakes’ 22-month-old baby boy had crawled into the clothes dryer located in the basement of their residence to hide.  When Hakes found the boy in the dryer, she shut the door and turned the dryer on for a period no longer than a few seconds as a form of punishment for the child.

The child was uninjured in the incident.

Child endangerment without injury is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to 2 years in prison and a $6,250 fine.

Not saying putting your child in a dryer is right, nut if she did this why isnt she guilty NOW?

I’m not saying putting your child in a dryer is right, but she didn’t turn it on.
And if she did, why isn’t she guilty NOW?
I used to crawl into the dryer, I got the door shut on me, so I’d know not to do it again.

I head from another source that she actually was present when her first son, Colby, died. That this did not happen under a babysitter’s watch. I think this accident that killed a child should be investigated further! Secondly, think about a clothes dryer…..pretty damn hard for a small child to pull the door shut himself, considering the door has to be pushed shut in most cases from the outside. No handle on the inside. Someone needs to dig very deeply into this case. I just read on the internet where a small child in England was killed this way, inside the clothes dryer. Anyone who would even consider this as a form of punishment has their screws loose, severely loose. I hope they really dig into this and find out the truth.

Colby was always into everything and insisted on playing with everyone else’s toys and whatever hat Dad was wearing. He liked to literally walk in Mom’s shoes. He was a “tough as nails” boy and bounced back from all the childhood bumps and falls that they have, rarely crying and willing to give it a go again. He loved exploring and being independent.

Is it just me or is there something off about how her last son was remembered per his obituary.. I dont think i would described my recently deceased son as basically a nuisance. It also almost seems like a for-shadowing to this recent event. also by saying the in mom’s shoes comment it implies that she is annoyed by the presence this son… oddddd. The case should be reopened this doesnt sound like a loving or grieving mother at all it sounds like a monster… and im sorry to the family members you are never going to want to hear what others say when it goes against what you believe in your heart.. but most people that do these things are functioning members of society.

I agree, I read that obituary at the time and thought how inappropriate is this?????

Probably the same thing happen to Bookmeyer when he was little?????

The general public needs to understand that Ms. Hakes is presumed innocent until proven guilty – this case is still being investigated by the DHS and law enforcement. It has yet to be determined if the report is founded or unfounded for child endangerment. Children are often removed from the home during the investigation if it is deemed that they are in danger. This charge is of a nature that if the event is investigated and she did in fact turn the dryer on, then the child’s life could be in danger if he remains in the home. It is yet to be determined if this is a case of an ex-girlfriend or ex-wife reporting a current girlfriend who has contact with or cares for her son, either out of concern for her son and the other children under Ms.Hakes care, or out of vindictiveness towards her. The article states that the incident was reported by a child to his mother, but did not state who reported it to the authorities. In my past investigations involving the DHS, the reporter was not divulged.
Mr. Pieschke is an example of the system working correctly, albeit unfairly. He was falsely accused of an incident, incarcerated during the investigation, and released when it was concluded that the accusations were unfounded. He is a rare case of being exonerated in a situation where several children made up stories, and he was the unfortunate bearer of the punishment for their “lies”. He was the victim of “rumor-mongering, gossip-whores”, by nothing less than being associated with the families and having contact with and access to their children. Ms. Hakes may similarly be accused only because a little boy witnessed her son climbing in the dryer, him telling his mother about it, and the story possible being blown out of proportion from that point.

I’m sure Ms. Hakes is lawyering up with a public defender, or even a private attorney, she was charged with child endangerment. The County Attorney obviously believes that there is enough evidence (confession?)to press charges, otherwise they wouldn’t. It sounds like there are other children in the household, so hopefully those children are being protected as well. People need to take responsiblity for their poor choices and actions and protect children.

I’m not here to defend this girl b/c she doesn’t deserve to be defended. What she did is sick and twisted and she deserves whatever she gets! What I get sick of reading is you ignorant people that say this just happens in North Iowa!! Do you really think this stuff doesn’t happen elsewhere? Do you honestly think that every other town in America, let alone Iowa doesn’t have problems? I gets so sicken to come to this site and see people ripping everything about the community! You don’t like, go somewhere else! But this stuff, sadly, happens EVERYWHERE!! Get out from under the rock you’re living in and stop blaming North Iowa for every random bad thing that happens!

Hate to say it but look at how many things happen in this city that are not reported. Wasn’t at one time mason city was called little chicago? Look at mason drugs everywhere child abuse and gangs i know it happens everywhere so until it stops here people have the right to speak their minds and if people don’t like it they can move to an island where they don’t have to listen to it!!

I understand what you are saying, I really do, but unlike most readers on here, I actually like Mason City and love most aspects of it. I just hate how many people from here or that still live here that complain about it, thats all. The instances that have been taken places are black eyes, I get that but just wish more people would support there town/community than bash it.

Maybe this person should only be allowed a clothes line if she has problems with kids getting in her dryer all the time.

that would make things better… frozen cloths from the cloths line on a 22 month old baby… makes sense to me.

Really, a close line? Think about it. If she punishes her kid by sticking them in a drier, how much worse is the punishment with a clothes line.

You people are the worst. This is why the Globe has comments turned off on articles about people arrested who have not been convicted of anything.

James~~~ You said “That people like you hold another persons life in their hands and are terrifyingly unqualified to do so.” WHAT ABOUT HER?? SHE HELD THOSE BABIES LIVES IN HER HANDS TOO NOW ONES DEAD AND COINCEDENTALLY A SECOND ONE IS PUT IN A DRYER!!! WHAT ABOUT THE BABIES LIVES IN HER HANDS???? WE ARE JUST VOICING OPINIONS AS WE SEE AND READ THEM. YOUR NOT CARING ABOUT THOSE BABIES AT ALL SO YOUR JUST AS GUILTY AS SHE IS!!

If it was the fault of the babysitter(she was in the livingroom) why wasnt SHE arrested?? it would have been HER neglect and not the mothers am I right. But somethings not right here sounds tooo coinicedental to me too 2 babies same age ~~~She should not have been allowed to have babies. If she didnt want them give them to people who want and cant have children!!! I hope she is found GUILTY!!!!

It would appear that the concept of Innocent Until Proven Guilty is entirely lost on the majority today.
Since most of you seem to pursue the idea of guilt with such glee and enthusiasm perhaps at least a few of you might shine the light on each other for a moment?
Consider that your premature call to judgement has absolutely nothing to do with common sense and that perhaps your actions at this very moment are a big part of what makes the world what it is today. That what you’re doing by conducting yourselves like a bunch of rumor-mongering, gossip-whores is on some levels even worse than the crime this woman is accused of.
If nothing more is required of you to condemn someone than someone else pointing a finger then maybe your moral high-ground isn’t what you think it is. And that’s the truly disturbing idea for me, that people with less than half a brain have no problems spitting on the ideas that this country was founded on, the very basis of our criminal justice system…
Perhaps that is where the flaw truly lies- that such mindless, vapid drones could be called for jury duty. That conformist scum of the earth like yourselves are the majority. That people like you hold another persons life in their hands and are terrifyingly unqualified to do so.
That any of you have the audacity to defend this kind of behavior, to make an attempt to rationalize it- is evidence of a fantastic inversion of values.
Proof that stupidity is now a virtue.

All of you disgust me.

Hey i used to jump into the dryer and take a tumble myself and it was fun and here you a;; act like it’s a crime….. yea so she’s an unfit mother but hey at least we have one less welfare baby alive….just saying….and we wonder where our tax dollars are wasted… just read the front page of the newspaper…

REALLY!!! didn’t she just lose a baby like two years ago to ” suffocation cuz of a child toy or a baby blanket” or something??? Coincidence?? i think not!!! women like her should not be allowed to have children…. period!!!

Good grief…poor kid doesn’t stand a chance!

Didn”t she just lose a baby two years ago…to “suffaciation cause of a child toy or baby blanket” or something?? coincidence…i think not!!! Women like her shouldn’t be allowed to have children!!!!

If shes so innocent~~~~WHY THEN WAS SHE CHARGED??????????? READ up and pay attention!! shes GUILTY!!!

You obviously didn’t read close enough. It says she was arrested “on those charges”, she hasn’t been found guilty yet. But it is coming! This is terrible!

I am the father of a child who was murdered here in Mason City by my ex girlfriend and her new boyfriend (I lived 1100 miles away at the time), so I’m justified in saying the burden will always lie on the mother for her to be better than the greatest when it comes to raising her little ones. The public’s eye of scrutiny is heavily upon you. I’m glad the police arrested this girl. Better the woman gets inconvenienced in court than the baby gets buried in the ground. If Mercy hospital would have done its job and reported the first mysterious reasons my child was hospitalized to Human Services…my kid may be alive today and in college.

I am sad to say I know this person, and she is definitely NOT a TRUE MOTHER. She is known to party and do drugs, along with the fact that she left her baby’s father for a short period to party and run around with a rough crowd, not to mention cheat. This is a person whom has a lot of troubles. I do not feel sorry for her one bit. She certainly puts children in danger. She should think a lot less about herself and start worrying about the children she is endangering. She needs to GROW UP, or considering putting her children in a safer place.

The story xxxxxxxx is true and true about colby. I am very great family friends with these people and was there for colby’s funeral. No one knows the real story here. You people are all strangers and don’t know this family. And you can’t all believe what you read. But I can tell you mallory did not start that dryer. I just saw her shild today, he’s fine and still crying for his momma. The family went to go snow mobiling and mallory was playing with her child in the house. Her bf’s son went into the house and saw mallory and her child. Her child rand down stairs and was playing with the mom and crawled into the dryer and her bf’s son saw him in there and told him mom she started it. Mallory is innocent.

You were there at the funeral so you know the whole story? If you know what happened that means you must have been there when it happened.? We are all strangers guess again remember we live in mason city and everyone knows everything and everyone. I feel bad for randy i hope he is doing good!!

Oh yeah? Did you stop over to smoke some dope with them too?

If you are such a great friend please tell us all what the bf thinks of you calling his child a liar. That is what you are saying here, right? You are painting a wonderful picture of this woman as the perfect mother, and at the same time the only way you have to defend her on this is to accuse a child of being a liar. I think most people would agree (including DHS, MCPD and the County Attorney) the child in this case is more credible than the adult.

If the death happened when she wasn’t there and what i have read the child was being babysat where was the babysitter when this happened?

The babysitter was in the living room. Colby had a larger head and he dropped his sippy cub and threw a fit and slammed his head down in the bar of the play pin and he chocked himself on accident.

“The babysitter was in the living room. Colby had a larger head and he dropped his sippy cub and threw a fit and slammed his head down in the bar of the play pin and he chocked himself on accident.”

That doesn’t sound like any kind of accident to me what does this child having a “larger head” have to do with his death? Children throw fits all the time and don’t choke themselves in their play pens or cribs. Also what in the heck was a 23 month old doing in a play pen if they were not sleeping? I have a 22 month old now the only time he is in his crib or a play pen is to sleep not to keep him confined so that you don’t have to pay attention to him again giving out more information that shows the neglect of the mother and or the babysitter. You should really think about your comments a bit better and spell check them as well.

I am confused over this whole thing how many children died?

I am family. So I’m the one to know. A little over a year colby died. Mallory was not there when it happened he was getting babysat. The child now they’re talking about is alive. Not hurt and the dryer was not one. He climbed into the dryer and a kid saw it and ran to his mother and said she put him in there and turned it on. The child is now with his father and okay. Mallory didn’t not do this.

What? did I read this right? Her other child 23 mo. DIED in the dryer? and now this one? OMG! and she only gets a “little time ” and a fine? shes not a mother!!! Shes a KILLER!!!!!

No? Her other child didn’t died bc of her and didn’t die in the dryer. Read his obit. And mallory wasn’t there for colby’s death.

Do you not know how to read and get your facts straight before you open mouth and insert foot! You might not look AS stupid then!!! Wow….. some peoples kids!!!!

We have a dryer large enough for her, but I think the time should increase equally with her age. By my rough figures she should get 13.5 times longer “ride”

Some of the facts here are right, but the headline is completely wrong! For thoses of you posting disgusting comments should feel embarrassed. You all shouldn’t believe what you read. And as far as colby goes, she wasn’t even there when it happened. BTW her 22 month old child crawled in there and she did not start it! A child went down there and saw it then told his mother she put him in there and started it! A great law suit will be filed. As of you mothers you would know any child who can walk and run will explore! But say what you want, it all goes back to high school drama, you people feed off of pain and public humiliation, how sad of you. I’ve known thede people for 16 years, and lived with them. Mallory interacts with her children like they’re her best friends.

Where was she when this happened?

For Anonymous:colby was being babysat, that’s all that’s needed to know. Mallory is so sweet to her children.

Just because YOU think you know someone doesnt mean she didnt do this!! what about her OTHER baby that DIED IN THE DRYER!!!!!!!! sounds toooo coincedental!!!! I and others think and feel she did it to both of them and the facts are right in front of you!!! Out of site out of mind!! Looks like shes got you brainwashed tooo!!!! Open your eyes! XXXXXXXXX looks like your closing them to the truth. Think of how those babies felt when they saw her do this to them before she turned the dryer on!!!How sad!! they need to put you in there with her!!!!!!!

Ok high school drama? Who left the damn door open and where was she when this happened? Sounds like someone goes out with her friends too much and leaves their kids alone who in the hell does that.? If she would have been responsible this wouldn’t of happened at all and the child would still be alive. You must be a family member or the mother of mallory or you wouldn’t have pretty much told everyone they are wrong to point fingers. But when you are a parent you watch over your kids and be thankful they are with their father now!

You don’t know anything. Colby did NOT die in the effing dryer! I’m family, I was there when it happened so I shoud know. Either you need to go back ro english class and learn to read again, or you just plain retarded hunny. And this child here, is another story. Gosh you people never learn to shut your mouth. If it were your family and people didn’t know anything you’d say something too. Check yourself.

“Mallory interacts with her children like they’re her best friends.”

Perhaps she should interact with her children AS THEIR PARENT. SMH…

Are you Mallorys mom?

Really I think they should investigate Colby’s death. Something doesn’t add up here. A small child dies at 23 months of a “freak” accident. Then a few short years later another child supposedly gets in a dryer on his own, “freak” accident. I have studied law for years and this should be re-investigated for that little boys sake. I think she does deserve to have a trial, but I think if it isn’t re-opened after this we are saying that this incident isn’t cause concern. If she is truly innocent then nothing more should come of it, if not and there is a pattern break it before another child dies. Or let’s just not investigate it and chance we will have another Mary Beth Tinning or Mary Ann Cotton before we figure it out. The child deserves at least that much.

SERIOUSLY………. The police need to look into this woman and take her kids away from her. There are plenty of people that would love to adopt and give a good home to these poor children.. Just makes me sick.

It makes me absolutely SICK that this woman would do this to her child and may only receive up to 2 yrs in prison. My cousin was just sentenced to 17 years mandatory in prison for methamphetamine charges. I am not saying that his use of the drug was right in any way, but he was only harming himself. When I think about the fact that he will spend half of his life in jail for harm to himself by his drug usage and look at how this woman is harming innocent children and may only face up to 2 years in prison (and oddly enough did have another child die of an “accidental death,”) it certainly makes me question where the justice is in our world.

Totally. This is precisely the sort of injustice that makes no sense, and begs us to reform our justice system…and overthrow it if necessary.

What the heck is in the drinking water in that town? sheesh

Some people such as myself aren’t able to have children. And then you hear about people doing this to their baby. Makes me sick!

When I was a kid I crawled into the dryer to play hide and seek from my mom, and you know what she did… She laughed and took a picture… This woman really need to go to jail and get beat by the woman who can’t see their kids

Wonderful mothers breed next generation of North Iowa winners. I’m so glad these moms follow their instincts and take creative steps to insuring their children behave how and when they want them. I can hear them muttering to themselves “It’s my child dammit…no one’s gonna tell me how to rear my child!”

Maybe this one, and the last one who left her baby home alone while she went out and partied can get together and teach a workshop?

MoM’
Do you have a link to this other childs death? I cant seem to find it

This is the link to the obit for the child:
http://globegazette.com/news/local/obituaries/published-wednesday-september/article_7fa38fb8-4438-5f3b-a738-70b8b9f74e88.html

To me it just seems odd that this child at 22 months was put in the dryer the other child at 23 months died both boys.

I agree something just doesn’t fit here. It’s odd and I think they should re-open the other case.

Yes, accidental suffocation, at 3 or 4yrs old.

Do your research Joe Smoker the child was 23 months old it can be found on the Globe Gazette website think it is really some sort of “coincidence” this child is 22 months old. Maybe they should do some more digging and truly find out if the other child’s death really was an accident. This is one sick person to do this to a child I have a 22 month old son and you can bet he is never out of my sight long enough for him to go downstairs and put himself in the dryer let alone to have the basement stairs no blocked off.

Didnt she have a son who died a few yrs ago? Something doesnt sound rite…

Can we do the same to her?!
Because we all know if her baby had died she would be saying
“I was only trying to teach him/her a lesson”
Which we all know is crap if your not able to have a good state of mind with kids then maybe you should not be having them!!!!

Yet another MC loser. Mabey she should be thrown in an industrial size dryer for her punishment for a few seconds!
Now’s who’s going to come on here and defend this piece of crap?

Ugh!!!! What a horrible thing to do to a child. Poor little guy.
