“MacGyver bombs” found outside Mason City residence

On Sunday afternoon, December 18th at about 4:33 pm, Mason City police officers were dispatched to 218 13th Street SE (pictured) for a report of suspicious items.

Upon arrival, they observed several plastic bottles sitting on the sidewalk that appeared to contain materials that when mixed could explode or start on fire.  These items are known as “MacGyver bombs.”  The Mason City Fire Department and the Iowa State Fire Marshall’s Office were requested to respond to the scene.

Iowa State Fire Marshall’s agents determined that the bottles could be potentially dangerous and were destroyed at the scene.  There was no property damage during the incident.

A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of three juveniles who were charged with reckless use of fire or explosives, a serious misdemeanor.

All three were referred to Juvenile Court Services and released to their parents.

The names of the juveniles are:

Jamison Diekuis, age 17 of Mason City

Daniel Shaw, age 17 of Mason City

Colin Halfpap, age 16 of Mason City
