Op-ed: Visions of Budweiser (by Peter Children)

December 17

I’d like you all to try something. Imagine you are high up and you’re looking down at Mason City. And just for 24 hours you are going to be bestowed with special powers that enable you to see inside the mind of others, but only pertaining to one subject; CES.

The population is divided between those who could care less about health risks and those to whom it is paramount. So we see health up near the top of the issue; but what about property values? Will this facility emit an odor, something offensive to smell? Please don’t say that any odor is the smell of money. This community’s future does not hang in the balance of 58 jobs and a three million dollar payroll. It has already been stated that if possible the plant could be operated by as few as 20….then it’ll be 20; why would they pay for 38 more positions they don’t need?

What if you live close by and as a result the value of your home drops drastically because no one wants to live there….including you? Will there be a “buyout” put in place before hand? Of course not, you’re just screwed. If you or your family start coughing after this facility starts up then call 911 not the mayor’s office at City Hall.

So when we look into the mind of those who’s concerns are centered on understandable need to know issues, we can’t find fault with their wanting answers. Now we look into the mind of that segment centered in City Hall who are trying their best to push this approval process through to a finalization that will allow it to operate, what do we see? What is in their mind that could dictate a directive prohibiting Pam Myhre from merely speaking to Max Weaver. How does that work? We must ask ourselves just what is it that spawns something as ridiculous or asinine as that? Have you ever wondered how city employees keep track of who they can talk to and who they can’t; do they wear color coded clothing, when does the ban on Pam & Max expire, who decides these things.

What do you think you’d really find if you could see into Bookmeyer’s brain….perhaps visions of Budweiser? But aside from that, what is he really thinking, I mean besides making a total ass of himself. He must know we have over 50 years left at the landfill….so what do you think it is? I have thought about it and this is what I think……he reminds me a lot of the kid who just wants his way, right or wrong he does not care. It is really not about taking time to explore every avenue we can to protect our health, it is only about what he wants, and I further think he wants it mostly because his nemesis Max Weaver does not want it. I see Charlie Brown as a better fit for Eric.

How does he saying go; “After all has been said and done, more will be said than done.” Perhaps it is time to thank the Department of Health for the letter they sent to ZBA; this rquires more than just talk. It would be wonderful if this facility actually would work….but when you are the first to implement it you better be certain the price we could end up paying is one we can afford.

All of you are assuming that there are smells and pollution…which hasn’t exactly been determined yet. As far as Max goes, he should work with the city Admin and leave staff alone. As far as staff goes, its fine for them to have their opinion as a person, but once they clock into work, they need to represent their employer, just like everyone else that works has to do. Unfotunately, I suspect MC has lost CES, I think they won’t get the answer they want from the zoning board next week and will go to another community that is a little more welcoming. I guess we will have to work on the next employer coming to town, oh, that’s right, there aren’t any. I see more former workers slipping into poverty as I write. God bless those that just want a job to support their family, cuz no one in MC cares.

You would think that a guy like Bookeyer, whose wife is a doctor and as such as more than a passing interest in all matters regarding health, and has young children, would show more concern in matters such as CES. Instead he is hell bent on proving he can do all the wrong things thereby proving his incompetence beyond doubt.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. in his book “Crimes Against Nature,” defines fascism as “a system of government that exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership together with belligerent nationalism.”

Being in manufacturing and designing many processes I have always felt enough checks and balances can be built in to make it safe. Things not only from the project design but also from the many external influnce’s such as fire and electrical codes, or the DNR and EPA. The problems arise when ignorance and greed try to take over. When a city official silences an individual who won’t jump onto the think like we do bandwagon for nothing more than satisfy his over inflated ego we all will lose. Bookmeyer and Trout have sent a message to all city employees on the voting boards of join us or be replaced.

The mayor has said he likes the smell if vicor and so has trout. Living in a Dreamworld as you would say. Add to that the new landfill we will have… quite the lusty aroma!

I came into town on Tuesday and VICOR smelled so bad I left and went to Clear Lake to shop!!1 Can’t believe you guys and your city allow one individual the right to foul your air with that stench. VICOR+MASON CITY=ARMPIT OF IOWA. I’m sure CES will stench the air also as you all do other than OBSERVER and wonder who HE/SHE works for?? HUMMMMM???

As I said elsewhere, I am not a party to any organization, company, or group. I speak on my own behalf and seek only to see that an educated decision is made based upon fact, not emotion.

Peter, The statement you made “he reminds me a lot of the kid who just wants his way, right or wrong he does not care” is the only thing that makes sense to me. So the rest of us need to put the focus on the community because the mayor’s focus is on his own ego. Thank you for your letter, Carol Patnode

And I still have heard nothing on how all the liquids that come out of these trucks will be delt with. If you have been by one of our trucks when dumping at the landfill you know what I mean. One thing for sure Bookmeyer and cronies are already plotting on how to silence the people at Tuesdays meeting. Be there if you don’t like what is going on or accept the results. I regret the day I voted for this over inflated clown.

As CES has said before at least one hearing, the odor control is already designed into the plant.

Air intake for the turbines in the IGCC plant will come from the tipping floor and sorting areas of the facility, and thus be eliminated.

Health issues are also something to be considered. As of yet, we have not seen final plans for the plant, but if it is like any other gasification operation, the gas is cleaned just like Natural Gas prior to transportation or use.

That in mind, why would anyone want something in their community that could sicken themselves? Emissions are never limited to a single geographic area or neighborhood.

Instead of worrying about the output, be more concerned about the input, your household trash. Require the Landfill of NI to offer consumers ways of disposing of hazardous materials that are convenient to the users, not themselves! Maybe a box at City Hall or the City Garage? Retail outlets? Kits? It would make far more sense.
