Illinois Man Injured Sunday While Hunting in Iowa

An Illinois man was injured Sunday while hunting deer in Monona County.

Seth Johnson, 30, of Plainfield, Ill., was hunting in a group of approximately 10 other hunters, when a 20-gauge shotgun slug fired by another hunter in his party travelled 167 yards passing between his lips at a 90-degree angle injuring his lips and some of his teeth.

Johnson was taken to Burgess Medical Center in Onawa where he was being treated Sunday evening for what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

“Mr. Johnson was extremely lucky. An inch or so either way and the slug could have hit him in the face or the neck,” said DNR Conservation Officer Gary Sisco.

Sisco said hunters were firing at a running deer when the incident occurred.

“This is a case where a hunter had tunnel vision and was just too fixated on the deer and not where the other people in his party were at,” Sisco said.

The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday just west of Moorhead.
