From the Mason City Fire Department:
The Mason City Fire Department received a call from a citizen regarding 112 12th St NW at 10:07 a.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2011.
The person reported smoking coming from a window. The residence is owned by Dean Schaefer and occupied by Erica Simmer. No one was at home at the time.
The Fire Department arrived at 10:12 a.m. to find light smoke coming from the residence. After forcing entry through the front door, a small fire was found in the back bedroom upstairs, which was quickly extinguished. The house sustained minor damage.
The Fire Department was on scene until 11:52 a.m. Investigation determined that the most probable cause of the fire was clothing that had been placed on a lamp.
No one was injured as a result of the fire. Battery operated smoke detectors were in place at the residence.
