Don’t Call it a Comeback- Frank’s Eatery & Drink

Story by Bridgett Hauert

The plaza area north of Southbridge mall is bustling with activity now with the Streetscape nearing completion, East State Street open with parking and the Historic Park Inn taking reservations, but Frank’s Eatery & Drink at 6 South Federal, still has not opened its doors.

Frank’s was unable to stay open during the beautification of Federal Avenue. Customers had nowhere to park and “folks just didn’t know we were open”, according to owner-operator Phyllis Edgar; they were also unable to get their deliveries so it just made sense to close until the city’s project was done.

There was much speculation after Phyllis’s husband, Harold Egar, lost his battle with cancer; many thought the elegant spot south of the Historic Park Inn may go up for sale. In fact, Phyllis is shooting for Frank’s to be open int the next two months. “It is going to take a lot of cleaning to get it ready for business with all the construction going on around it; but right now LD’s has to be the priority.”

LD’s Filling Station, at 620 12th st NE, is one of the other businesses the Edgar family own. It is a casual spot where it was not uncommon to see Harold and now it is a labor of love for Phyllis. “Harold always said it took two, I never knew how much I was helping him.” but she is getting the hang of it and anxious to get Frank’s going. “A lot of people have been asking and everyone is very supportive” and they won’t be disappointed. Those who have not visited Frank’s Eatery & Drink before will be welcomed into a warm relaxing environment inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright; leather couches, beautiful stained glass and an inviting fireplace with an geometrically ornate mantel.|
