Fire Marshall Elaborates on Two Weekend fires in Mason City

Mason City ñ July 26, 2011 – The Mason City Fire Department responded to two house fires over the weekend. Both fires caused damage only to the rooms and their contents where they started. Both fires were quickly extinguished by firefighters. Working smoke alarms were not found in use at either location as batteries had been removed from the installed units in both incidents.

Saturday July 23rd at 0719 hrs. A passerby noticed smoke coming from the upper floor at 714 North Pennsylvania Avenue and notified occupants and dispatch. The house contains four apartments, and firefighters discovered a fire in an upstairs apartment occupied by Lynane Kofoot. A search was conducted and Ms. Kofoot was found unconscious in the bedroom, removed through a window and transported to Mercy Hospital by ambulance. She was later transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The property is owned by Joseph Siems of Nora Springs.

The fire started in a sofa in the living room, and was confined to that area. Ms. Kofoot may have been sleeping in the living room at the time of the fire, and attempted to escape through the bedroom before becoming overcome. Probable cause of the fire is an unattended candle. Sunday July 24th at 1048 hrs. Christine Snyder called 911 and reported a fire at her residence at 946 9th Street S.E.. She stated she returned from giving one of her children a ride to work and discovered a fire on a table in the family room. She alerted the family and they made a brief unsuccessful attempt to extinguish the fire before exiting the dwelling. The fire was confined to the family room area and a small portion of the kitchen. Cause has not been determined after investigation.

The American Red Cross was notified in both incidents and provided aid to the residents. In both fires there were no working smoke alarms sounding when firefighters arrived. This would be a good time to check your smoke alarms to be sure they operate correctly. Also check to see if your house numbers are visible from the street to make it easier for police, fire, and ambulance personnel to locate you in an emergency.|
