Resturant review for Chop (by Peter Children)

I had the privilege of dinning at Chop Restaurant last evening, and I might mention it was opening night. You could say it was virginal in many ways because it was the “first time” it opened to the public. I had been looking forward to this night for many weeks; when you’re my age most of your virginal experiences are far behind you. How does it go; Was it good for you?” For me it was a home run, over the fence and outa the park.

My choice was the 10 ounce cut of prime rib with a side of Greek pasta slathered in burnt butter and topped with imported cheese. I could cut the prime rib with my fork it was so tender. The size of the entry was far more than any normal human being could eat. Those of you who are used to the best, you will appreciate knowing it was delivered to my table pipping hot. My companions ordered differently, one had the John Dory fish in a saffron sauce, another ordered salmon with a maple glaze and the other deep fried shrimp….there were no complaints at our table.

The building which houses this pinnacle of exceptional cuisine is over one hundred years old, and it was a pleasure to see the old girl’s charm had not been violated, on the contrary, if anything she is more refined now then the day she was born. The front facade is stunning and it only gets better once you enter. The interiors are warm and inviting with a wonderful mix of compatible colors. This gives truth to the old saying, “It’s one thing to do something, it’s still another to do it right,” and this was done right….more than right.

I believe given the level of talent coming out of that kitchen, and the history of this family’s love affair with food and its preparation, the dinning area will prove inadequate. It only seats around forty fortunate people at one time…you can however have your meal served in the lounge area should you wish providing there is an available table.

Tom & George’s father & mother along with their aunt Myrna, built the Prime& Wine along with Pappa’s on the West side of the city. Many of you are familiar with the banquet offerings as either one who had the banquet or one who was a guest at the former Hanford Inn which they operated. Their children grew up in the kitchen often sleeping next to the broiler as their father & mother worked through the night…..so you could say this business is in their blood.

I know there are many restaurants and cafe’s in this city and surrounding area…but there is a big difference between eating and dining. This town is saturated with mystery meat that is served in make believe super clubs; Their father taught them through the years to only buy the top grade, never anything less, and the public will soon see the benefit of that advice the moment they cut into their steak, Chop only buys top grade beef & pork, yet their menu offerings are very competitive with area pricing.

It is a known fact that the accouterments in a room from which the ambiance is derived add immeasurably to the overall dinning experience. Here you will not be disappointed, your surrounding are tantamount to yet another course; it is a room that you will enjoy spending time in. This is not some franchised chain, these are home grown people who have been a major force on the culinary landscape of North Iowa for a half century.

I urge you to experience this wonderful addition to the city. They chose the downtown area in which to locate which is a plus, and I feel could be the catalyst for further commercial investment in the city core. There will be a lot of people going through those doors. It is further my opinion these forty seats will set the standard for fine dining in North Iowa. Be sure to call in advance for reservations. Lunch is also served.
